In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

The Tussocks - 1 p.m. - Pouring rain and strong , cold winds.

Dogs - Libby

The weather has been terrible here today so when I took Libby out I only intended to be out for 5 minutes and I only intended to walk about 200 yards in total.
Libby had other ideas . She pointed a rabbit within 50 yards of my car and then tore off over the field/moor to look for something else. I didn't think there would be anything else out in that weather so I let her have her run.......and she pointed a cock pheasant further out on the moor.

Once we'd flushed that off she went again and then she pointed again ........a snipe this time. She tore off again and although I was now a bit wet and very tired I let her run .........there is something about watching a hunting dog that is really determined to find game tear up the ground that raises the few hairs left on my head ! It sounds a bit airy-fairy / arty -farty but it is almost as if I am "in" the dog as it runs.

Libby was covering an awful lot of ground but she was doing it intelligently. She is experienced enough to recognise possible game holding cover and she made certain those places were checked by her nose as she ran. She pointed again, this time near to a small pond. That point produced a snipe and then she hunted on and pointed a waterhen .......which took off over the pond before I could approach the point.

I was by then , needing to get back to my car. I was soaked and I was tired and I was very cold but Libby went on point again and this point looked a bit suspicious. I have seen this sort of point before so I put Libby on the lead and then took a closer look. A mallard duck was sitting on a nest . I didn't disturb her any further so I don't know for sure if she had eggs or not but I suspect she did have eggs because she sat so tightly.

Having moved well away from the pond I released Libby again on the downhill walk back to the car and she was now on a tail wind. She went about 150 yards out then began to hunt back and again she pointed. She pointed straight into a little gorse thicket and as I began to walk around it to reach her a roe deer made her escape out the side.

In a state of near exhaustion I finally got back to my car after having walked nearly a mile. It was worth it at the time just to see her "go" but I am suffering for it now .........
