A few seasons ago I would have been highly dissapointed with us for such a none compliance.....however as long as she actually gets the job done even without asking (as you put it) I am passed caring, I have done the best I can with hermunstyman wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 10:43 am Lol PRH has it right, if the dog found birds but not where you/keeper thought they would be, then you need to listen to the dog. Yes the dog should of `asked' before doing it her way, but in thick cover who's to say she didn't? Not giving a yay or nay is always going to be yay to a hunting dog with scent up its nose.
How often when retrieving do we send a dog to `A' where we think or are told a bird is down, only for the dog to pull towards `B' where the bird is? There comes a point where compliance to training is not what we require in the working field. Recognising that point for what it is and not assuming disobedience is where you work as a team.![]()
Look at the positives, she came back![]()

Lynn and I were out today on a commercial shoot 150 bird day, keeper is a good pal so I can do as much or as little as I feel able on the day. As it happens I felt reasonably fit so despite some huffing and puffing we got through our usual beats......first drive went well blanking in some crop. Second drive went well blanking in a wood then another crop field then hunted out some cover crop...third drive I didn't understand at all, blanked in another crop field then along with a couple of other dogs was tasked to hunt out a strip of cover crop, about fifty yards wide and hundred and fifty long, wind was directly from right to left, I sent her out same as I did earlier and same as i always have (as far as I am aware anyway) however she legged it forward in a straight line for the full length of the crop, no harm was or could have been done to the drive but I wasnt impressed, I just cannot work out why this happened because obviously she could not have winded a bird as wind was wrong for that. Last drive we hunted out a large wood which was teeming with birds, she was on fire and was hard to handle but we got through it with no issues other than pulling out further than I would have liked. So a mixed day really but it was nice to be out again

Re: possibility of working her
I would guess she has worked out where the action is! Many do and go from the off straight to the front of the wood or cover.ips wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 5:48 pm Lynn and I were out today on a commercial shoot 150 bird day, keeper is a good pal so I can do as much or as little as I feel able on the day. Re: possibility of working her
It's possible however I didn't mention that we usually hunt this out from the other side so fifty yard, I was on a different beating line yesterday so went from the edge ninety degree angle to usual so 150yd long, if that makes sense

Re: possibility of working her
Nah, if you were passed caring you wouldn't still be trying to understand why
I keep training my old dogs faults right up till the time they go on the one way trip to the vets. It is not about making them any better, as like you say we sort of get use to them, but its about gaining knowledge and techniques that may help the next addition without the `risk'.
With your next post, if I have got it right, you started from the top right of the cover crop and she legged it down the right side ( wind blowing right to left ). If so, note I am looking at it from a HPR foremost perspective, I would first ask myself was the wind directly right to left or angled slightly behind or in front? Slightly behind and the dog `could' have an excuse for an air scenting dog. A spanner is `suppose' to be a ground scenting dog but that doesn't mean it can't take advantage of the wind, especially if you shoot over your dog. In which case the dog is doing its best to push the birds back over you to get a better chance of getting a bird in its gob
The next possibility ( and yes there are no certainties ) Is before I assume you were blanking in alone. There were other dogs on this occasion. There is nothing like a bit of competition to blow a dogs mind to its training
Thirdly ( and most likely
Glad you seem to be over the worst of ill health and are getting back out beating and shooting. Come February you might take the lesson from your little dog and run naked through the cover crop .....just because you can
Re: possibility of working her
Your right, i do care

Wind was defo directly right to left...
Yes previously blanking in a crop field alone.
One of your theories may well be correct but I remain unconvinced on any other than "because she could, so did" although I have always been of the opinion that every action has an explanation / reason
Many thanks my friend nowere near right yet but well enough to get out if I am careful about it

Re: possibility of working her
Sometimes dogs just get confused, last time out shooting I was with a chap whose dog has retired and he thinks he is too old to get another, at one point I lost contact with my dog in very thick cover where neither I nor the dog could see more than about 5 yards at ground level, after a couple of minutes with me getting increasingly concerned my friend called me and said she had been working beautifully for him and that he had been tempted to keep quiet as he would get more shooting that way. She had found "me" and was hunting nicely, only it wasn't me, we were dressed very similarly but I felt she should have noticed his beard!!

Re: possibility of working her
Ha! I lost my old dog today whilst we were sweeping through a wood picking up. She is deaf and doesn’t see very well….I’m there on the whistle and eventually gave up and wandered back to the car….only to find the dog there sat waiting for me. I was pleased and annoyed in equal measure! She made a few nice retrieves today but is now at home and stiffening up. She does appear very pleased with herself though!
Re: possibility of working her
Had an invitation to shoot on a pals rough shoot 7 guns walk the land up as a sort of mini driiven affair. Really enjoyed it although day was cut short due to terrible weather, eze had four good retrieves for Lynn, seems I am now redundant

If Eze works better for Lynn you'll just have to get yourself a puppy...
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
