Just to throw a spanner in the works about "cocker style" do we think it could be that people are training them to quarter like a springer as they think thats the way a "spaniel" should hunt……JET1955 wrote:I agree with you Naj about a cocker has a distinct action, but i.m.o.it also as a distinct style in the way it works its ground.Quoted from someone who knows a thing or two about the breed:- "Whenhunting they make use of little runs,in and out of cover, made by game. The best ones seem to hunt similar to a stoat.Rapid movement, then stopping momentarily, checking left and right for air scent and game movement. In and out of cover. They command attention, you dare not take your eyes off them, you never know where they will appear or what will happen next".
Certainly agree about not knowing what s going to happen next

I've seen lots of good cockers at training events been taught to quarter mostly by Cocker inexperienced trainers they seem to train them the same as a springer…..which isn't really how a cocker should work
Watching a good cocker is one of the best things ever lb for lb the best gun dog anyone can ever have
Cockers are supposed to "basket weave" in areas looking for game …..rather than quarter like a spring more a case of deliberately finding game than sweeping an area in a pattern which is what springers do bestips wrote:Interesting !!alpha wrote:Just to throw a spanner in the works about "cocker style" do we think it could be that people are training them to quarter like a springer as they think thats the way a "spaniel" should hunt……JET1955 wrote:I agree with you Naj about a cocker has a distinct action, but i.m.o.it also as a distinct style in the way it works its ground.Quoted from someone who knows a thing or two about the breed:- "Whenhunting they make use of little runs,in and out of cover, made by game. The best ones seem to hunt similar to a stoat.Rapid movement, then stopping momentarily, checking left and right for air scent and game movement. In and out of cover. They command attention, you dare not take your eyes off them, you never know where they will appear or what will happen next".

So how should a cocker be trained to hunt if not quartering springer style. ??
