PS
A few posts of late have got me eager to get beating on big shoots again (I could not last season for various personal reasons) but she will be ten by the start of the next season so I wonder when to retire her and when you know ??

My 12 year old was out picking up last season, she managed to eye wipe the younger ones a few times too. Depends entirely on the individual dog, if it wants to go when you are obviously going out beating / picking up then take it. Build it up gradually though rather than doing a whole day the first day out.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Dogs in general don't know how to pace themselves, so that responsibility lies with you. There is nothing wrong in giving an older dog a days work providing you remember it is an older dog and not that young thing that would career around like a mad thing and think nothing of it at the end of the day.
As Judy said, ease them into it, and cut the day short early on ( before they show you should of done it a drive ago :naughty: ) And you may well find that they work just as well without the pace, as they are more efficient in their work. Yes your going to be the villain of the piece at the time, but they will sleep more comfortable in the evening and soon all will be forgiven.
