I saw the demo at the cla, seems to me the hart of the it is that you use the board as a place the dog is happy and confident.
Using the box, all the distractions are removed from the dogs mind because hes think "i sit on the box everytime, All I have to do is sit here"

So when you introduce something new, you can put ths dog in confident frame of mind just by putting him on the box.

I will be buying the DVD, weather or not I will be using this method I dont know but seems like something worth learning.

I'll also buy the DVD, even if it will cost a fortune. Weather or not it is wise for a novice like myself to be trying something like this, as opposed to traditional methods remains to be seen. I'm more inerested in knowing how you go about transfering it into the field once the boxes are no longer there. And also, how you would go about stimulating there hunting insticts whilst using the baords. Will be more of a curiosity thing for me

I should imagine that if Mr Openshaw, the best gundog trainer in the UK by a long way, is using the method it will work?.

And I'm fairly sure, that when he wins his first trial with a dog trained that way I'll be prepared to invest in it

This method is not exclusive to gundogs and has been used for a long time in other disciplines by world renowned trainers Bart Bellon and Michael Ellis to name but two in Mondioring, IPO etc.

There is also the use of it (in a slightly different context) in teh domestic setting.

The former is about reinforcing the desired behaviour and preventing the rehearsal of inappropriate behaviour; the latter is about teaching dogs to settle and/or going to a place in cerain circumstances eg the presence of guests et al.

Rytex dogs have won trials in the USA using this very method. Not to mention other bloodlines both Springer, Cocker and Retrievers.
Place training, whether it be table, box, door mat, is a verifiable method of teaching, and proofing desired behaviors. The possibility of various teaching and training exercise's are unlimited

This vid contains one flushing the other dog doing the retrieving, Neither of these dogs were started on the place boards as young dog they have only recently been introduced to the system, the have taken to it quite well.
Place board training really smooth out the delivery of the dog doing the retrieve.

Remember it is just a training tool in the handler/trainers tool box of training systems
