Things we hate to hear on shoots..

Sarcastic comments from other handlers when you've got a well trained dog and that it's a free-for-all when he/she is let off the lead (and runs in a straightline). This same person will, once your dog has flushed and sat to shot/fall, send his dog for the retrieve and ruin it for you. And if you send your dog before he realizes will let his off too so you stop yours on the whistle to prevent the 'tug of war' situation occurring.

These people do my head in.

"You'll cover that gun over there. But keep in mind that his spaniel may run in on your birds".. and then finish with 2 birds in the bag because of the f**** spaniel shithead.

What I do like to hear is "After the shoot there will be dinner and all the picker ups are welcome too" :-D

Lol! I meant the particular spaniel, not all in general :-D Or maybe I should say the f**** dog owner.

I hate to hear pickers up moaning about guns with dogs wanting to use them on the day.

How hard is it to keep your dogs away from behind the gun whilst he picks a couple and then sweep through after? Its no different at all from if the gun has no dogs.

If they have a dog that runs in then that really is not your problem, if they pick nothing then that is also not your problem.

They are there to enjoy their day, not to provide picking up dogs with retrieves. There are always birds you can go back for to give time for the gun to get clear.

In general I agree but there are exceptions. There is the guns dog that runs all over the place picking up and dropping birds anywhere and everywhere.
If I go back to search for runners etc. before the guns have got clear of the pegs then, when I return to sweep up nearer to the pegs, I am unsure if all the birds have been picked or not . If I then hunt my dogs in search of non-existent birds I waste time getting to the next drive.
Usually neither of those things applies to my picking up days as I am usually a back marker among thick woodlands and don't have a clue about how many birds fell near to the guns. Occasionally I hear the pickers up moaning about the guns dogs or the guns moaning about the pickers up dogs but I can just smile and walk away ..... I have been too far back to have been involved.

Me too, I prefer to be back marker if I can, occasionally I get my turn at the front so the dogs tend to be on leads to be sure to be sure. On one memorable occasion little g*t brought a runner, got within three feet and marked a second one, threw the first in my general direction and legged it after the second. I jumped forward to grab it, stuck my foot down a rabbit hole and landed on the bird. :brickwall: by the time I was sorted out she was standing there all innocent with the second bird.

We had a picker up who always had beautifully trained Labs, he always stood as far back as he could get, dogs off lead, but one day he got thrust into the limelight, couldn't get any further back and was, accidentally, in the hot spot. Poor chap, his dogs all ran at least twice during the drive. :16: much sniggering in the team. Oh yes, the back is much safer.

Back to topic, I'm happy to see guns with dogs provided they don't turn and shout and swear at me if my dog gets it wrong and picks one of their birds instead of the runner I sent her for. I appreciate they are paying for the day but we are all there to enjoy ourselves and there isn't a perfect dog on the shoot, they all make mistakes from time to time. After all,we wouldn't need to pick up if the guns all shot perfectly would we?
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
