The BVA/KC hip score scheme has been running for about 30 years - and over that just about 1000 ESS have been scored - not a lot of data to work on. Even in a family where the hips are generally good there will always be the outliers where the hips are problematical - for what ever reason. All we can do really is to try to breed for good hips (even less data on elbows). I've got some hip score data that I'm willing to share - pm me.

Interested in your reasoning Vicky?
Vicky has already given a brief reply - essentially with a clear dog or bitch you can use any untested mate as the progeny will never be affected by the condition(s) that a parent is tested clear for - but they may be carriers. Vicky and I are members of the English Springer Spaniel Club and it is one of their requirements that if a DNA test is available it should be used. On the working lines, probably a hands worth of members abide by that ...

I had a clear bitch (Jodie) and picked out the best stud for her (untested) and got a very good litter. I was then really lucky that later the stud owner health tested and did well in field trials (Int. FTCh Helmsway Hawk of Witchwillows)

It is essential that Carriers with all the other positive attributes of the breed are part of an on going breeding programme - we cannot afford to lose any more from the gene pool.

I've used Buddy OFTW Halaze Oh Boy of Woodash - He is DNA tested and a very handsome chap!

Interesting to see that he was tested quite late in life, at 8 years old. Really nice to find out!
cheers,
Alice.

yes Alice it's smudge he will never be a flyer but up to now he is very good in the beating line I have no blood pressure issues with him.as for maisey (saturns girl) one of the hardest hunting dogs I have had and very easy to train.

I've said it before but Cleeburf Bramble is a much overlooked dog. He has produced some cracking pups for me and they are all classic spaniel with massive trial potential. You want to see one of Tom's young bitches by him. I would give my right arm for her.

I'm surprised no mention of Newflame dogs.

They are very good lookers, but I know at least one forum member has had...less than ideal results, work wise with one. That may be the reason.
cheers,
Alice.
