In the end it all comes down to good mouth manners.
Is anyone going to tell us how you teach those though?
So many ways to accomplish this and one method does not suit all. I think clearly it is easier to do up on the training table but far from necessary. If I come by some videos I will share. It really is more about timing than anything else.

And patience and encouragement and (especially) praise, Jackie - not sure the cousins have any such training table, but they may be of a mind to put a placeboard atop a couple of saw-horses for a better idea of how it "works."

Are you able to shoot a bird for the dog to retrieve in a controlled environment?

I hesitate to post this video because I know the force hold is unpopular on that side of the pond but it is a good example of the timing I have been talking about in regards to calming a busy mouth.
If you ignore most of the video and skip to MINUTE 4:00 you will see Jim Dobbs demo the timing and one of the many techniques for calming a dogs mouth ... although he is using a gloved hand the timing is the same.

At 6 months old I wouldn't care if he is mouthing the dummy. he's a puppy.

Never seen this old video but that's great especially your time stamp. Well executed with zero emotion involved. And the dog is happy even when being corrected. That's a true dog man.

Sometimes we create problems where there are none. Who gives a damn whether a dog ‘rolls’ a ball or dummy, it’s how it handles game that counts and how it handles artificial stuff has no bearing on that. And there’s no secret to it! No need to shackle a dog and ram stuff in its mouth, (and there must be something wrong with my eyes,

the dog didn’t look remotely happy to me!) with or without emotion. Take it shooting in whatever capacity you have available, work it long and hard on hunting and retrieving and the mouth will sort itself out. Tired, happy dogs don’t waste energy on messing about.

Never too young. You'd be surprised what game exposure does to bird dogs. It'll fix a lot of stuff...
