Thanks, gave him a bath mat to go on top of his raised bed/platform and a big pork bone which was demolished in under an hour.
He's grown into a big brute with power to spare so I'm really glad I cracked on with his training a bit earlier than I expect/plan to with my next pup. He's nothing fancy to watch hunting, but does seem to be very effective at finding/flushing game.
Different shoot today so different kind of ground so I'll see how he goes, there's a large area of swamp down the bottom that they never manage to sweep effectively so I'm hoping Bryn will do well in there and there's a field of kale to experience. Other than that its a mix of steep hill and undulating fields and wooded gullies.
Nellie is out picking up on her first shoot so I'm hoping Poppy works well, Lily is going to have to sit most of the day out in the pick-up.
Bryn's blunders
Re: Bryn's blunders
As far as I know Poppy was her usual exemplary self, Bryn had a bit of an 'off day' to start with but on the third drive I successfully sent him back up the burn for a runner (his first ever) that had been pricked on the first drive, after that he settled down and did his job. He is definitely at his best in heavy cover/difficult ground, ideally with water involved, on open ground light cover he stays on the lead for now.
The abiding memory of today's shoot is Nellie up to her neck in peaty water heroically holding aloft a cock pheasant (think statue of liberty pose).
The drive immediately after that we nearly lost Bryn and a lovely wee 18m sprocker called Rosie, that area of ground has got seriously treacherous in recent days, thankfully Rosie's handler heard Bryn and found them both, meanwhile I'd rinsed my bits in a peat hole and replenished the water in my wellies for the umpteenth time and was frankly relieved when the guns called it a day.
Would I do it all again tomorrow..........TOO RIGHT!!

Re: Bryn's blunders
Thursday's silver award class, Bryn was unusually well behaved, last exercise was the sit stay and recall, Bryn was last to go but the lady said see if you can send him to the far mat then bring him back, so sat him at heel sent him 'back', stopped him on the mat sat him paused then recalled then walked him back to the start position feeling pretty pleased at his little demo.
Friday evening; Bryn was a little sick bringing up a bit of a RAW wrapper he'd got hold of, but ate his supper and seemed fine.
Saturday 5a.m. got up to head down to Millom for some beating. Bryn was a bit sluggish getting out of his bed and didn't have much enthusiasm, refused to eat his raw so tried him with a couple of small pieces of my toast he tried a bit but wasn't that enthused. By 6a.m. I'd decided Bryn was definitely not fit to go beating so texted to give my apologies to the shoot. Bryn was sick again but just fluid, he was starting to look worse and I was becoming concerned and made a decision to take him to the vet, in the mean time I made him up some diarolyte to keep him hydrated which he drank.
Got him to the vet for a 1.30 appointment and a thorough checking over his temperature was just at the top end of normal, so unlikely to be an lurgy from the water he was stuck in on Wednesday and the vet couldn't feel any obstruction in his gut, so I decided to treat him symptomatically, and came away with some antibiotics, some stuff to calm his stomach (but not anti-emetic) and stuff for his eyes. Once home I encouraged Bryn into the garden where with some assistance
he passed more of the RAW wrapper.
He spent the rest yesterday generally looking poorly and sleeping though he did take on some more fluids. I made a bed up for him in the little window alcove in my room so I could keep an eye on him but he decided to sleep by the door until the early hours when he decided my bed was more comfy.
Although he's looking a bit better today he's still far from right and has spent the morning sleeping but at least has got stuck into some chicken and rice Nellie has just made for him, just hope he manages to keep it down. Going to take him back to the vet tomorrow just to make sure he's OK.
Up until now I've let the cats have the wrapper to clean off the remaining meat but that has now stopped, I think they must have dragged one to where Bryn got access to it.

Re: Bryn's blunders
he's kept the chicken and rice down, had a couple of the sausages I'd prepared for yesterday's beating, is much brighter and has just started mooching but still quite subdued. We've also had another 'marigold moment'
so hopefully that's him unblocked now

Re: Bryn's blunders
Glad to hear he is improving, but sorry you had to miss beating.
Re: Bryn's blunders
Just relieved he's recovering, there'll be plenty more shoots to beat in the years to come. Shoots coming up on the next 2 Saturdays to look forward to, after that the calendar gets a bit messy
Re: Bryn's blunders
Don't overdo it with him, he's only a baby!
Oh! And stop feeding him his food ready wrapped, it won't save on poo bags!

In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
Re: Bryn's blunders
will work out less than one a week this season if he does the ones on the calendar.

Re: Bryn's blunders
Get him on Dragons Den, mek a fortune.
