I do go beating and have dogs that do the job. I have dogs that pick up ,all on large commercial shoots. 10000 bird days on exmoor. I also trial with moderate success. Believe me when I say that a well trained trialing dog can do whatever is asked of it wether beating or picking up. Lots of trial winning dogs are trained in the beating line.
Your very kind Ian but i doubt i could get anywhere near trial standard, apart from anything else i dont think i would have the fortitude 🤔

I tip my hat to you that you are able to take a dog trialing and same dog beating 👍 perhaps its down to how well and how consistent you are with it or perhaps the type of shoot and the way keeper runs it , maybe ?
I have seen a few trialing dogs on beating line and at least one of them had won stuff. It started off well and was quite impressive however as the shoot progressed it had a moment same as the rest of our dogs do, he got away with it as the 40 or so birds it ran in too all went over the guns, plus i don't think the keeper saw it. Another dog was i think quite young and although i think had won tests (and maybe trialled i am not sure) was in effect in training, he was very selective as to how and were he worked it so much so that the rest of us were in effect doing his job, never saw him again 🤔 the other couple i have seen must have been no better or worse than rest of us as i cant remember anything specific.

I think if your experienced and good enough then like you the dog will do what's asked of it however my only point is that the rest of us are only beating (maybe the odd day on pigeon and or the odd rough shooting) and there are aspects of the usual training regime that imo are not required and maybe there is a better way of training, i dont know what yet i havent worked it out but my next one will definitely not be trained to be retrieve driven 🤔👍

Friends of ours bought a pup from us six years ago. He had been beating all his life and was adamant that he did not want the pup to retrieve for fear of it running down to the guns to collect a bird. I said ,try the stop whistle, he said what? He has had spaniels for 25 years, the dog does not even know the word sit. He still tells us she is the best beating dog they have ever had.

Train the dog to the best of your abilities and to end purpose you desire. There is no wrong or right end product as long as the dog does what is asked of it, then the love and bond between the working pair is all that counts.
Everyone is right.

Yeah, I’m deeply offended.

Just an observation, WC, but there are plenty of dogs that will sit and stay on command, and while dummies are tossed about, but are out of control when exposed to game. Mine are shot over regularly and have reasonable self control around game (if you’ve got that you don’t need commanded control) but would probably fail your sit/stay test because I see no point in training it, per se. It doesn’t necessarily prove anything other than that you’ve effectively taught a sit/stay. I do agree with Springcopse that you should train for what you want and not for what others might think you should want. Unfortunately, many don’t train fir either.

ESS, when you say you like your dogs hunting tightly what distance are you working to? I always had spaniels working to 15 yards either side and that gave a bit of leeway for taking in a bit extra ground to press a moving bird and produce it while still reasonably comfortably within shot.
