I reckon Naj probably knows more about training spaniels than the rest of us put together.

It's not about scruffing a dog or not, I'm not adverse to that, it's about his crappy methodology which make him need to scruff the dog in order to teach it the stop whistle. There's a world of difference between punatively punishing a dog who's being willfully disobedient, and this 'If the dog don't understand, hit it harder' attitude. Dogs don't set out to do wrong- this dog certainly ain't.

Goodbye.
cheers,
Alice.

You saying it's not possible to train a dog to a high standard without routinely swinging it about by the heed? I might be inclined to call BS on that...

What I find fascinating Is that is literally just a scruff and a slap ( No Malice ) All controlled......, holy hell if someone in the street caught me doing something naughty when i was a kid, they would give me a slap, if a local bobby was on duty he would ear tug me back to my parents an they would give me a slap in front of the bobby....there is a big difference in Correction and Abuse....

These days you cant give your kid a verbal warning without getting funny looks....

Same principle really...

SfP.....lets talk dogs, as in 20/30 not one soft one that's a doddle to train.....Easy said I know.....Swinging it about by the head? Are you watching something else...???

Now off you pop on your witch hunt!!

Cool it!

The dog was swung about by its ears simply because it moved from its position, it had obviously never been taught to sit still so why start in on it? Why not teach it properly instead of stressing it out?

I trained dogs like that 25 years ago, I hope I have progressed a bit since then.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

out of interest, I re-watched. He says the dog is at the stage of 9, 10 maybe 11 months.

Alice.

I'm Cool buddy

Ahh see so you did this, does this mean your a bad person, does this mean you cant train a dog, does it mean you shouldn't own a dog? All this has been said to him since the video...

No it doesn't mean any of the above.....but you adapted with new drills and new ways of learning...some people just stick to what they know, doesn't mean they are bad....maybe just a little less educated in new ways of training...

My point proven as such

Have a nice evening all :)

My cocker Charlie behaves very similarly to the dog in the film, I found the only way to get him to stop creeping was to go back to doing sits and stays as a separate exercise for a while . I don't do ear lifts but Charlie thinks being scruffed is fun or is all part of the game because I scruff my dogs regularly over fences and out of steep or sheer banked rivers. Scruffing need not be a punishment to a dog. Maybe it's my eyesight but I thought the man did ear lift the dog.

I also thought the dog was not far enough on in its' training for the trainer to expect it to sit/stay while both he and the dog were distracted by the third party with the camera.

I think these methods go back to when spaniels were hard as nails and nothing fazed them – it was necessary to get a bit hands on to get the message across. I think that hard, head-strong attitude has been bred out of them as we keep breeding from the most biddable dogs, the biddable dogs that are easy to train and win trails.

Try getting an Irish one  Maybe a reason more Irish studs are coming into mainland blood, so we don't end up with a load of unworkable putty?
