Scenting conditions will not necessarily slow down a fast dog. Cover should. The Americans have bred a lot of run onto their dogs, some are too fast for their noses, but the good ones can work in varying cover. I like dogs that cover ground quickly, the potterers and sticky dogs drive me nuts. I admit that i am on the lunatic fringe.

Again, you (or me), might be missing the point being made. The slowing down the posters are refering to is when a dog runs out on a retrieve and gets to the area of the retrieve item, not how fast the dogs hunt in their normal patterns. I've seen many occassions where cover actually speeds the time of a delivery/retrieve, rather than slowing it down.Springfield Pointers wrote:Scenting conditions will not necessarily slow down a fast dog. Pace is pace. The only thing that will change the way a dog hunts will be cover, if it is so inclined. A plodder will remain a plodder. A fast, driven dog that is seasoned will understand hunting cover. I agree that some dogs that have not the ability can overrun their noses, those dogs need reigning in if they are to succeed. Pace and ability together will always win over a dog that only has one of those items.whistleshappy wrote: Again, you (or me), might be missing the point being made. Not the same cover we have down South then! By the time they have disentangled both themselves and the bird the drive is often over.
I too hate to see dull dogs although my oldest will put herself to heel and let the younger dogs do the running if she knows other dogs have already swept an area, she isn't daft. Given a fresh area to hunt she will give them a run for their money.

In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Ok. I admit there's a difference between cover and cover. I do this for pleasure.Judy wrote:Not the same cover we have down South then! By the time they have disentangled both themselves and the bird the drive is often over.
