The price of pups is not a new source for debate and conjecture. When I first became interested in dogs , other than pets, 35 or more years ago, I questioned the price of a pup with a well known breeder. He justified the extra cost of his pups, not a great deal more than the going rate, by saying " It's taken me 40 years to develop my line and you are having the benefit of all that hard work for £ 150, about £ 25 more than the average price of those just putting any two dogs together, without any thought"
Makes you think

I thought i would set out a little task a few month back.

I didnt have a litter at the time, So i made an advert x3 all the exact same, same pictures.

I put them on a well known website and put the advert under 3 titles and the same price. The title's were as follows.
- Well bred Working spaniels
- F1 Cocker Poo's
- Sprockers

All for £700

I could of sold 2 full litters x10 times over....I bet you already know which ones they where!!
As long as the market is there, so will the sellers!!

That's the point though. Not everyone makes their bitch worth something to have pups from. I have nicely bred, nicely tempered, good steady honest working bitches which suit my needs and subsequently the needs of those seeking the same qualities from their next pup. I don't breed much. One planned litter from each bitch if they make it as far as I'm concerned and the health tests pan out.
Plenty of people are putting done nothing dogs to done nothing bitches and charge the same as I'd charge or the even the same as what excellently bred and excellently proven bitches and dogs litters cost. That's where the gripe about people in it for the money comes from.
Normally as supply goes up prices can come down as the market is flooded with pups but with cockers remaining the desirable dogs they are the price remains / increases because people will pay it.
I bought my bitch 3 years ago from a well known trainer for £450 which at the time was mid range for what she was on paper. It was up to me what she became. I don't think I could find a decent cocker for that money now.

Could this be the answer for the popularity of cockers??
Yes and the previous photo's of Kate and Lupo, not long ago the general public had no idea there was such a thing as a working cocker, now days I am often asked "is that a worker"

F.T.Ch. bred ,on both sides of a pedigree, is pretty rare but "ordinary" bred dogs are as thick as fleas on tinkers dog blanket. Ordinary bred dogs should cost far less but all too often they cost very nearly the same.

My first lab cost me £8 ,my next lab cost me £25 and the next one cost me £75 . Those last two labs both got to the Retriever Championships. I look at what is being asked for even run of the mill labs now and I am horrified. The prices for labs and for many other breeds has jumped way beyond what inflation has done during the years between those labs I had and now.

I would not breed dogs to lose money but I do think breeders are getting a bit too greedy when selling run of the mill pups.

You guys should look to source future prospects from recognised breeders here in Republic Of Ireland – transport costs are small and given the dire economic climate here prices are very very low.
As previous posts have said prices will only be charged if people are willing to pay it.

I will hopefully have a litter of cockers in 7 weeks so watch this space… Dam hard hunting bitch demon in cover – sire is up and coming prospect of Alan Mooneys here in Dublin

I just checked the pedigree of my last cocker. Nant-y-corn Oak. There are sixty two boxes on a 5 generation pedigree form. On Jet's pedigree forty of these are F.T.Ch's and of these forty six were champion stake winners.

I think what he actually meant was FTCH sire & FTCH dam but I may be wrong.

But did it do any better job for you than a well bred dog with less red ink on the pedigree might have?
