Hi Judy, that field is one I quite often use but always in the early morning. My G.S.P. has often been interested along its boundary fence. Three times in total I have let him jump the fence into the forestry. He has gone in and put up what I think is this same cock pheasant.
When Charlie found it the bird was in the field . I think it probably feeds out there as the day goes on. The timing of my visit was I think the main reason for finding this bird where it was. It was a damn pest anyway , Charlie chased it a long way.
I was out deliberately looking for rabbits early this morning with my G.S.P. and a cocker spaniel bitch belonging to a lady I'm trying to help. We got there just a bit too late, early morning dog walkers were already out there and had chased off the rabbits. I let my big G.S.P. youngster have a hunt and he found and was steady to a big dog fox ! The fox was terrified and ran like stink but it needn't have worried . The G.S.P. is one of the gentlest dogs you'd ever meet, there isn't an ounce of aggression in him. He is very likely to injure you by banging into you or similar but that's because he is a boisterous big twit ! I often call him Goofie !!!
Up to present he has managed to run into me so hard as I was siiting in some long grass that he knocked me out cold. He has also damaged one of my kneecaps while doing an ultra fast dummy delivery ! He's just one of those dogs !
This morning the spaniel worked pretty well but was slow to sit and inclined to meander on for 6 to 8 feet after the stop whistle was blown . I advised the lady on what to do about this - - - this is ever so easily accomplished when it isn't your own dog doing things wrong !
I saw a fair number of rabbits, the lady saw a fair number of rabbits, even my G.S.P. saw rabbits but the spaniel didn't. She is just too small to see them run over the tops of the ever growing cover. We had the bitch on a check cord but it wasn't needed, she will chase or so I'm told but she doesn't hunt like Charlie , she isn't as fast, she isn't quite as headstrong and she is more controllable.
I hope to take Charlie out later but for the moment I'm going back to my bed I'm knackered.
