Their is to many variables that can happen when breeding.so take your chances on the best dog that you like and the way he is bred and go from their.if it doesnt work out so be it try a different dog the following year. Also your on about some dogs that you have mentioned that have sired bitches havent produced anything. You cant count every pup that has been bred just because it hasnt got awards in trailing. Most of the pups could have went armature/novice handlers that didnt do the pups just justice.Or even just beaters dogs for that matter.

It was out of a dog he bred that Jeremy run. Halaze Hickory of Edgegrove, must have wanted to get the line back.

As much interested in the bitch line than just trying a get back to the 'Laddie" line, after all, he could have driven less than half the distance and used Vatanan who's a ftch as well.

 Thanks again for your thorough reply, Grouse - much appreciated. It's great to find a place where people put so much thought into their replies and want to encourage others to join the discussion.

I think it is absolutely right to breed with an aim to produce the type of dog you, personally believe in: I'm going to 'agree to differ' with you on how to go about it to an extent though, because I've seen in other breeds what happens when lots of breeders use the same sire and base so much on the results of competitions. Talking of nature v nurture, I think I've gradually been conditioned by what I've seen in other breeds to be extremely wary of breeding for short-term, personal gain in the competition-world. Having said that, I do respect you for knowing what stamp of a dog you want and striving to produce it :)

:? Now....who was it said "only" beaters and "just" a keeper's dog..............where's my terrier?!!!!
