Kennelled or not?

Post by SLB »

Just wondering if your gundogs are Kennelled or Live in the home with you?

I asked a question recently about if dogs listen, train and work better if they are not around you the entire time, and apart from a few hours (apart from working hours) my dogs are around me the whole time - they have the choice to leave me and wander around the house or garden but they can stay with me if they choose. The only time I shut them out is for my lay ins, an hour after they have fed and an hour after their walk and when we eat. But I don't think this has affected how they listen to me. But having a friend who's dogs are confined to the kitchen and garden and see her when she plays with them or walks them or takes them out for 1:1 training - and seeing how responsive they are. And then working with dogs that are in kennels except for walking and training and seeing how they are.. it just peaked a question.

But that is another thread - I just want to know if you kennel or not. :) I'm just nosey really.

No but i do work full time and got a dog run so there are plenty of time for them to be bored and wait for me to produce some fun(training). For some dogs it doesn't matter how you do it but i think some benefit from being bored and some thrive on having a bit of stuff going on all day, following you around being a busy buddy.

I've had house only gundogs and I now have part house, part kennel and run dogs. I haven't noticed any great difference between the two "methods" when it comes to training and work. I do think some dogs benefit from more human contact within the house .... Dixie the springer is a wee bit like this. Whether they are in the house or the kennel makes no difference to my cockers, they are bonkers whichever way they are kept but Dixie is more sensitive, she sleeps in the kennel at night but is a house pet other than that.
Dixie did not "blossom" until I made her a house pet.

Don't kennel although my house does look like one most of the time. If you really want a top competition dog then I maybe its kennels and just come out for training, nothing else. Is that a great life for a dog? Probably not.
If you want a good worker then either, although plenty of people have house dogs which trial. If your dog thinks you're interesting then it pays more attention but, as I've said before, some dogs just bond with you as some people do, they are the ones which will be 'yours' whatever you do.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

PG - what I wrote was my own observation.. it's not right and it's not wrong - it's just what I've seen.. it was just cogs turning. My dogs and I have a brilliant bond with each other.. :)

I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference provided no bad habits are learned in the house.

Mine are kennelled for my own piece of mind, they are safe and happy and so are my wife and kids!

Dear Mr Wullie,
I've noticed a trend in your recent posts of 'being the voice of reason and calm consideration'. My initial reaction was suspicion that you were feigning becoming a big southern jessy softy in order to get KC to invite your display team to Crufts next year. (I envisage the arena filled with impenetrable dense foliage 10 foot high and an invisible motley crew of handlers and dogs. The plumby-voiced commentator's spiel is periodically interrupted by thrashed undergrowth, random gunshots and cries of ' get that feckin dog on a lead ye bastad'; ye gonna share that bottle big man? Etc.)...
Then I re-read your comment about cockers being bonkers wherever they live and realised that you are indeed a gentleman with profound insight! :-D
Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience!
