gettin my spanial to hunt
I recently just bought a springer spanial. The dog is 22 months old but has had no work at all. Its back ground is gud comin from rough shooting dogs which the seller assured me were excellent.I hav had the dog out a few times to see if he will pick up any cent but to no success. I wud b greatful if anyone cud advise me on a few drills r methods that wud help me and my dog. cheers

Re: gettin my spanial to hunt
Have you seen either the sire or the dam working ? If not see if you can see them working.Find out what your dog can do. Will it sit or recall always on command ? Does it retrieve. Has it ever seen game to know what game is ? Dogs hunt for a reason and that reason is to find game or whatever game substitute you put in the place of game (such as a dummy.) If your dog has no idea what game is , why should it hunt for it ?

no i hav not seen the sire r dam working. The dog will recall an sit no problem. i hav also done a few basic retrieves, no problem again. so i decide to run him wit my other spanial the other day. he flushed a rabbit in front of the dog put he didnt respond at all. i dont want to giv up on the dog but at the minute he's not proving himself. i suppose time an patience is key. wud u advise a rabbit pen r wud it b too much too soon

Re: gettin my spanial to hunt
Truthly i dont exactly no. I bought the dog off a man who is well known for his spanials, he giv me very little info as he had only recieved it off a man a week before i bought him. I think the dog has had little work in retrievin and sittin but if he wont hunt he's no good to me. If i cud just get him to drop his nose i am confident everything else shud fall into place.
Re: gettin my spanial to hunt
When did 'YOU' get the dog?.....from this man.....that only had it a week?/ or So?....maybe?....and didn't give you much info?

Where as 'megsdad' ,It comes across OK, in the context
No wonder Withnelmoor left

encourage him to chase a few rabbits that will get him fired up and then worked from there.
