1st day, 1st season

Post by PRH »

Tomorrow is my first day shooting this season, and Willow's first day of what will hopefully be a full season. We did a few tasters last season so this is it. I'm more excited about the dog than wasting cartridge on partridge. Slight draw back is I've been working all hours and since the nights have drawn in her training has been limited. Fingers crossed....what could go wrong.......

I'll let you know tomorrow

Well what a day. She was a grade one pain in the butt all day. She didn't run in but danced about on the peg and I was totally distracted from the shooting. I left her in the car for a couple of and even had to borrow a corkscrew this afternoon to tether her, which I've never had to do before and really don't want to. Entirely my fault so back to the drawing board, I've got a few partridge and pheasant to work with and will focus on steadiness. She was also pretty grouchy with other dogs, so goodness knows what that is about. We haven't spoken much since getting home.

Such a shame :(
As you say ..back to the drawing board, get over it and don't stress about it. ;)

If it makes you feel any better, my 7 year old Spaniel has her moments and can be a right ignorant bitch sometimes
That'l bethe female hormones in her

You are not alone out there. I couldn't keep my cocker Charlie still at a peg even if I tethered him to the " Queen Mary."

Difficult to replicate a shoot day in training, do you know anyone that you could stand on peg with at a small shoot and work at it there?

Would it not be beter to leave the gun at home during the first couple of weeks and then the dog has your full attention?
It is a lot in my opinion to expect a young dog to sit still as a peg dog especially a spaniel in its first season.
