Dog had x-rays done a couple of weeks ago, since then he's been licking the shaved spot on his front leg, where they injected the sedative, to the point that he's now removed a layer of skin.

Any tips for something to put on it to promote healing and dissuade licking (Nettex Sweet Itch Salve?) or should I just leave it and he'll stop licking it when the hair grows back anyway?

Buy 'Anti lick strips' they work REALLY well. But open carefully because if you inhale any loose dust you'll sneeze for an hour!

Is boredom also playing a part maybe not as much exercise/training lately? You could also try leaving him with a stuffed Kong or a bone as well as the lickstrips to help break the habit but let him chew something.

Dont think this applies in this case - he spends little time alone at the moment (with either me - or the wife takes him into her office). But it does make me wonder why its so sore this time (he's been shaved before) I wonder if it took a couple of goes to get the line in and he's left bruised ?

How long can you leave the strip on for? as 6 stickers are £14

If your dogs mostly in a safe environment and supervised , put a muzzle on it, one of the open/cage greyhound style , Then just remove at nights or when it suits and use the strips.

One of my colleagues (student nurse) couldn't help but taste it the first time we used them. At first she thought it wasn't that bad, then it started to nip...!

May I ask is this an old dog. It is something I have come across quite a few times over the years and until recently I had never heard of a reason for it. The Anti-lick strips will help but I saw somebody writing about Thornit Ear Canker Powder. Basically if your dog has an ear mite problem it is possible that the mites get onto the top of the dog's feet while it lies with it's head near the feet. Putting a bit of the powder on the top of the feet will deal with the mites and the licking will stop. Obviously if you think this is a possibility you would treat the ears as well.
