Using Your Dog as a Stud

Hi Everyone

I recently purchased a ESS pup with a good blood line and although its a long way off yet, I have already been approached by several fellow Springer owners who would like him to father a litter with their bitches. My worries are that if and that's a big if..... I agree, how it will effect him emotionally. I intend to trial the pup and would welcome any advice as to how this could effect his performance and or mental state if I were to consider

Thanks

I think that the people that have approached you are only being "speculative" as no serious bitch owner would consider your dog (pup) until he has proven himself. I am sure you are aware there is a long way to go yet and hopefully all will be well.

As for change in temperament I can't comment, having never used any of my dogs, I'm sure there will be plenty of members who will advise accordingly. Good luck with him and just enjoy his puppyhood.

As above, I wouldn't commit your dog to stud on the basis of his breeding, wait and see if he is any good. ch x ch breeding doesn't guarantee a good dog.

As far as his "emotional" state is concerned I wouldn't be too worried. If every dog used at stud broke down in tears after they'd become a father for the first time we wouldn't have many dogs left to work with. And for trialling it doesn't affect the FTCH dogs used at stud that trial successfully every year.

I`ve had several dogs that were bred from and I didn`t notice any change in temperament or any other way after they sired a litter. The more important factor is whether the dog is good enough to breed from and is the bitch compatible.

My cocker Dax has been used at stud several times. There is a difference in his behaviour. He is randier than he used to be and will now check out every dog he meets ..... just in case his luck is in ! This does not apply as he is working, then he is all business.

It depends on the dog.. But I've seen a big difference after a dog I had sired two litters- he turned headstrong and was thinking he was jack the lad all the time, also started bitching which is quite annoying.

Seriously though, I have seen no difference in my dog after using him for "mating" ;)
