Any crossbred owners out there?
Hello to all fellow owners of the most brilliant bred dogs of ancient lines
Before I ask I just want to say to everyone that I am enjoying reading threads of all dogs hunting or non hunting
I've always had hunting dogs of some sort from gsp and springers to jack Russell's
I am just wondering does anyone have any crossbreeds and how do they perform in the fields
I have a 13 week old Viszla x gwp who already is showing excellent signs of a good gundog
Look forward to your replies folks

Hi
I have a Lab x GSP who is now just approaching 6 months. After making lots of mistakes with my old GSP who has never worked partly through my incompetent nurture and partly through his hot headed nature I am absolutely thrilled to bits with this pup. His training to date has been all fun based but he is like a sponge.
He's a retrievaholic, always something in his mouth; his hunting is beautiful to watch even though it has only been short distances so far; and he does point although that is certainly not as stylish as an HPR. He's confident but not arrogant with it so he will get out into cover, scrub, woodland, in and over water BUT he listens and watches for direction.
Look forward to seeing how you wee pup comes on
Cathy

Re: Any crossbred owners out there?
I have a 3.5 year old lab x springer spaniel he was only ever bought as a pet but shaped up to be a very good worker hes a fantastic retriever and hunts as well as my springer, he will smash through any cover, BUT he was difficult to train weather it was because i was a complete novice never having owned a dog before, i think i made mistakes early on that had a lasting effect, i started training him with my local gundog trainer when he was 6 months old, and to say he was unruly is an understatement, i attented training classes every week, twice a week in the summer, and he was the class clown he would disrupt most of the group showing off with his prize (the dummy), hes very strong willed and can even now be very hot headed, but his days of doing some spectacular bog offs with me in hot persuit are long gone
He has now done a few seasons beating and has proved to be a good working dog his only faults are that he does pull out further than id like when hunting and he whines when we are waiting about between drives, or when hes retrieving dummies in the company of other dogs

Re: Any crossbred owners out there?
I have a year old labxcocker
She is a very steady bitch and ver eager to please.
When she's in the house you would think she's on sleeping tablets as that all she seems to do. When she knows she's gong out its like flicking a switch and this enerjetic focused completely different dog comes out !
It's actually a nice way to have her but still baffells me how different she can be .
I training her more for retrieving for mainly wildfowling as I have a cocker for rough shooting
She has picked up blind retrieves very well so there's not much wrong with her nose and she can't get enough of water retrieves and is now just starting to take direction in the water
Although she has great confidence when being handled when she is close to strange dogs or strangers come up to her she gets very unsure and insecure . Her head goes down and her tail underneath her. Hopefully more socialising will turn this behaviour around.
Her looks are more like a miniature lab as opposed to a cocker. She weighs around 22kg
Her coat is very thin not like a cocker nor a lab.
All in all a very eager to learn and eager to please bitch.
Just hope she's big enough to cope with the rough cold lough water .
Although I think she will be .
I'll post a photo when I get a better chance

You mean "owners of crossbred dogs"
I know some pretty dodgy dog owners, but I'm not sure of their heritage.

At least they aren't crossdressed owners...Springfield Pointers wrote:You mean "owners of crossbred dogs"I know some pretty dodgy dog owners, but I'm not sure of their heritage.

Re: Any crossbred owners out there?
Years ago we had various crossbred dogs. Most were more than good enough for what was expected of them by my father who was a keeper then.
The least successful was the Lab X Springer. It was a total plug and as thick as two short planks.
The Golden Retriever X Labs were his favourite and he would seek them out when he needed a new dog. He also had a very good Pointer X Lab and English Setter X Lab.
Much less useful were the mongrels with the exception of one and it was fantastic. His mother was the Pointer X Lab and his father was the English Setter X Lab. He looked like a Border Collie X Springer. That dog was one of 4 kept from that (accidental) litter which involved 2 sires, the other sire was a Golden Ret X Lab. The other 3 pups he kept ... were complete duds!

Happiness is where we find it, but rarely where we seek it.

Re: Any crossbred owners out there?
Hi I have just bought a 10 month old English pointer x GSP, I plan to work him under falcons and hawks.
I am new to working dogs so this is a big learning curve for me as well as Dexter, he is very keen to learn and is coming on leaps and bounds.

crossbreds can really surprise you, best ever cow dog I had was an ESSxCollie, he was entirely self taught just from following us around because I'd written him off as a pup as one of my charity cases
absolute sod with cats though
