Hi,

Can anybody recommend a kennel / run size for a working cocker.
the dog will be housed within the house when i or my partner are home but will be housed in the kennel run when we are at work. my partner works part time so this will generally be for a maximum of 4 hours a day for 4 days a week

cheers

jonny

Make it as big as you can so you can always add more!

if not can you recommend something more suitable

i hope not to get any more than one (my girlfriend will leave me) lol

For what it's worth I would be very reluctant to leave a working bred Cocker kenneled on his / her own.
They are the most sociable of all working dogs and collectively resemble a group of Meerkats so left without company & to quote another discipline they will '' curl up & die'' !
Get them a permanent companion of any affable / sociable breeding before even considering leaving a Cocker on its' own !

Oh right.

i may have to think twice about getting one.

thought he/she would be ok for 4 hours a few days a week. but if not i don't want to end up stressing the dog.

Cheers.

4hrs is f all some people leave them alone for 6-8hrs. As long as you give them a good 30min leg stretch before you go they are ok.

If you have room indoors for a crate I wouldn't bother with the expense of a kennel. Pup will be fine in a crate for four hours if you can build up to it over a week or two.

For four hour sessions I would agree with Judy and buy a decent size crate

I would be walking the dog for a minimum of 30mins on a morning before i leave for work. and then training/ walking for around an hour on an evening.
the last thing i want to do is get a dog that will be a nightmare to leave for any amount of time. my parents have a gsp that had to be medicated for seperaton anxiety for years. thats one of the reasons i was thinking an outside kennel / run may be fairer on the dog
