Yesterday out at a hunt test i noticed something i've been thinking about before. Some cockers are just 'small dogs' basicly built the same way as a larger dog. Others have a larger body but short legs making them look like they have dwarfish legs, that if you gave them 'normal longer legs' they would be looking just like any larger dog. Not sure how to explain it better than that, sorry. So question is, does some of the cockers have a dwarfism gene affecting the lenght of the legs or are they just bred to have a larger body, making the leg seem shortish to me?

Cockers, dwarf legs?
Re: Cockers, dwarf legs?
the diversity between cockers has surprised me, there's a neighbour with show cockers which are a totally different shape to the working bred cockers and even with the working bred cockers there seems to be a fair variation in shape.
Have also been wondering, given the seemingly smaller size and lighter frame, if there has been an injection of cocker into some Springer trial lines to increase 'fizz' or 'busyness'.

Re: Cockers, dwarf legs?
I have believed for some time that some cockers have dwarfism genes.
I know of two dogs that as you say have good sized heads & bodies but are rather short on the leg. I find that these type are strongly built with plenty of bone.

me too. I tend to associate 'queen anne' or at least not 100% straight legs with this type of cocker too.Breezybrook wrote:I have believed for some time that some cockers have dwarfism genes.
