I think they would make the dog hotter. Rather give it some shade.

I can vouch for these

http://www.silvershademesh.com/K-9Coolers.html

They are AMAZINGLY effective as they are mesh and so allow the air to circulate. We used them on the Newfoundland Display Team on the hottest days at the CLA and underneath, the coat is postively cool ... BUT .... I don't think they're available in this country any more ... you'd have to send to the States, but they are very light so it might be worth it.

Folks it's not so hot that dogs will need heat reflected of their bodies. These coats although seemingly practical will have no effect on the dogs ability to keep any cooler than if they were in the shade. If you are going to leave it tied up in the mid-day sun for a few hours then one might have some use for one.

You can check the properties of this photo and you will see that it was taken today around noon. The temperature was showing 22 c down in the town and it couldn't have been that far off that figure on the hill. My pointers don't do water, usually, so they must have been under pressure to want to dive, literally head first, into this pool. They had been running for about twenty minutes though.
I know diddly squat about the silver coats in question. Some Gucci gear is good and some is just about crap but it looks like a well thought out piece of kit. What I do know about though were what looked like terry towelling jackets the Gordon Setter fraternity took to putting on their dogs a few years ago. They worked on the porous pot idea. Put the jacket on the dog wet and the evaporation of the moisture reduced the temperature. The setter folk, as usual, had got it all wrong though. They wanted to cool their dogs so that they didn't have to clip them. They should have clipped them and used the coats.
If you were to use either of these garments (assuming the silver one works) to reduce your dog's temperature after exercise then they would help the recovery process immeasurably.
Obviously pointers were bred to work at this time of the year but there is no doubt that heat exhaustion and dehydration will at least take the edge off a dogs performance and do have the potential for serious injury if not handled correctly.
I will let you make up your own minds if it is hot enough for a dog to gain an advantage from being kept artificially cool or not.

The ones which are silver but also absorbent - you pour water on them - are very effective. They work in the same way as a wine cooler - evaporative cooling, as well as reflecting the sun rather than absorbing it. I used one in Greece on my black flatcoat - the only way he could cope with the heat. They are used a lot by the agility people. My new flatcoat had it on at a recent (hot) training day, and after initial amusement, people were very impressed at how cool her body was underneath the coat.

I use a Ruffwear Swamp cooler... Here's the US site.. Read the product reviews to see how effective it is in hotter climates than ours. A great piece of kit.

I use these Cool Coats: http://www.keepcool.org.uk/dog%20coats.htm

Just immerse in a bucket of water & wring out, then place on dog. They really cool the dog down but it does not get wet.
