Barking

Post by nswellsc »

Hi All

going to make this as brief as I can. My 9 month old ESS training is coming on well. My problem is his whining and barking at night. I have tried everything, going to bed later, not feeding or water after a certain time etc but he wakes any time between 3 and 6am and starts to bark to be let out to poo and wee even after a good walk earlier in the evening to do his business. I can't ignore him as he will wake my family but more importantly ..the neighbours. I'm at my whits end and shattered also having to get up for work. He will also bark if caged and knows I'm in he house. I maybe need some professional advice???? but can't afford it

What can I do??????????? :brickwall:

Thanks

Difficult one because unfortunately he's had nine months of learning that whining and barking produces you.....

Are the neighbours going away any time soon or how amenable would they be to you explaining your problem and asking if they could bear with you for a week..? Then issue the family some ear plugs and don't forget your own and leaving him to get on with it...

If he doesn't do it while you are at work as I'm assuming the neighbours would have complained, :? then I'd say he's truly attention seeking and you are rewarding this behaviour. At nine months providing he's had a late night toilet break he should have enough self control to last the night.

When he does it while he's in his crate and you are in the house what do you do?

pets at home do a collar that either vibrates or whistles when the dog barks, others give a short spray of water or water with a bit of citronella in.

Innotek BC-200 No Bark Collar. I moved my springer outside not so long ago into a kennel having been indoors since i got him. It took 3 or 4 days of wearing the collar and being ignored if he barked and now he is fine out there. Its not cheap and you should make sure you read all instructions but its worth every penny for me

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll try the ignoring him for a week and see how we go. We'll perhaps put Jase's ear defenders on

Difficult because every time you respond the dog is getting rewarded and hence trained. Try chucking a bucket of water on it or similar and saying "quiet" I am only half joking on that. Remote training aids can work well for this "if you set up for it when you know its about to happen rather than react once it has" this way the dog doesn't associate the correction with anything but the very start of making a din and that includes you. It need not necessarily be a shock collar just a remote correction
