Disaster in Cocker City. I bought a young cocker dog online ( I can hear the sighs !) he is actually got good potential but as we run bitches and dogs our dogs are castrated.
On good advise we decided to have him implanted to stop his coat going dull - it didnt work and we now have 18 cocker spaniels ! He is going to pay a little visit and I would not have an implant again (the dog I mean) . Has anyone else had this ?

er, bodgy did you mean to post in this particular place? Mods, you might want to move this?

So the implant failed and he impregnated one of your bitches?! if so, blimey, I'd be mightily unimpressed with that!! sadly the only experience I have with the implant is through friend who's lab dog it caused massive and catastrophic personality changes in, ultimately resulting in the dog being put to sleep. Very distressing, but apparently a complete one-off, it still makes me wary of them though.

On what date was the implant put into the dog and on what date did the bitch whelp?

You need to speak to your vet about this. It should work 6weeks after implantation and for 6 (or 12) months. There are reports of dogs mating bitches after 6 weeks but no pregnancies resulted in clinical trials. The manufacturers do recommend 'taking precautions' (so visit vet) if bitches are mated by implanted dogs. As with all drugs unusual things can happen and this should be reported as an adverse reaction (in case it's a dodgy batch!)

I think my dog had the implant a couple of months before he got the two bitches in whelp. All these puppies are a nightmare but all are heading for good homes. Every cloud has a silver lining it is said and after loosing a favourite cocker dog we now have a pup which is almost a lookalike to keep. Poor old Zeus is sadly missed, as a gundog for style 'nil points' but 100% dependable and a comical loving pet, his replacement we named Woden at present in the kitchen performing a full frontal assault on my wellies.

Going back to your original post and out of curiosity, did the implant have any effect on his coat?

The implant had no visible effect on his coat. When we had him he would not leave the bitches alone, he was a real sex pest. The vet said his body may have rejected the implant as it did not seem to cool his ardour but now six months later he shows no interest much so maybe it was a slow reaction. He is going to have a return visit to the vet for a more permanent fix

The implant may have failed but you still allowed him to cover your bitches?

Keeping them apart works for most of us!

The two bitches came on heat in the same week, after he had covered them which we did not think he would we were assured that they would not be in pup which was the whole point of having him implanted. We have three dogs and three bitches ,the dogs being neutered. This has proved a most satisfactory arrangement over a number of years , the dogs will still sometimes cover the bitches but have never impregnated them. The dogs still see off marauding sheepdogs etc , they do not stray and are not a nuisance to others out shooting and do not seem to fight. All the dogs live together , relax together and work together with no hassle whatsoever. My contribution is to warn others in similar circumstance to be aware of the chance that a transplant could fail,
