Cleptomanic dog?!

Post by Miesque »

Recently my springer has started a very odd habit of collecting things and putting them in his bed. They are always taken off the kitchen counters, Tupperware, a chopping board (!), utensils. Yet he doesn't steal food, ever. Tonight he took a plastic bowl that was right beside a plate of sausages.

Ideas? Any reason he would do this?

Maybe he is thinking of starting his own cottage industry?

Some dogs are collectors , often a bitch that fancies having pups will collect suitable and unsuitable puppies to keep in her bed.

One male lab I knew coz I bred him was found with several unharmed farmyard hens inside his kennel and run. The dog had discovered he could jump the runs fence and go off for a little bit of "free hunting." The runs metal fence was only 5 feet high and it at once got a roof installed over it before the dog brought back anything worse.

Perhaps he wanted a bit of extra company Wullie! I sometimes look after a cat that brings live birds in! She just sits and watches as I attempt to catch them as they flutter around the conservatory! I'm sure she just catches them for company!

My show bred Labrador is a little more up market, so far amongst her stolen items have been a couple of mobile phones and someone's wallet, and she actually started emptying the wallet of it's contents

 My Brittany pup is a pickpocket and she is good at it. She waits until her victim is sitting down and is preferably distracted ....perhaps on a computer, then sneaks up and removes very slowly and very gently whatever she can take from trouser pockets. Her favourite thing is paper hankies but just about anything will do.
She has another quirk , she only ever seems to steal from left hand trouser pockets ?????

Sometimes I have detected her as she pickpockets me and have looked down at her. Her eyes have always been firmly fixed on my face maybe to notice signs she has been noticed ? I have never corrected her for being a pickpocket as I rather enjoy seeing just how sneaky she can be. The items she steals are usually taken to either me or my wife as a present and she gets praised for doing that so I suppose she will always be a pickpocket.
