Have a look at the Canon G13 or 14. Very good pocket cameras.

I was going to buy a bridge camera but was talked into a sony cybershot dsc hx50. It's smaller than a bridge and takes an awesome picture. You can fiddle with settings or let it do all the work.

I have had compact, bridge and dslr.... For the best pictures, ease of use and price I would thoroughly recommend a bridge camera. I can't recommend any of the current cameras as I have had mine for several years now. However I have had two of the fuji fine pix s series and they are very good. The only fault that I have found is the battery compartment cover comes undone very easily... This may not be an issue on newer models though but something to beware of if using it in the field.

I've got a Canon bridge camera that I've had for about a year, and I have a DSLR; probably down to pilot error but if it wasn't for the ability to put a zoom lens on the DSLR I wouldn't really need it; the bridge takes fantastic photos without any fuss.

Must say, thinking about the tech going into cellphones these days, if you just want a point and shoot camera for "snaps" one might as well just use the phone's camera. My phone takes better pictures than some of the well known point and shoots.
