Working Dog Insurance

Post by Silver Lining »

Hi All

Apologies if this is not the right place for this post, i did a search and couldn't find anything on this..

I am starting my research for a good working dog insurance plan - i notice that BASC are recommending Petplan as it seems to cover most things, my dog though will not be a 100% working dog. I am aiming for a working dog insurance plan as i do plan to eventually start beating and hopefully picking up..and although this will not be every day or weekend, i think a working plan would be better than a "normal" dog plan ( i would rather over insure than under insure ).

Can anyone recommend any others than Petplan that they use ? I am assuming the likes of Tesco Insurance ( for example ) will not cover this.

Thanks, Sarah.

Thank you Rascal - I did a search on " Insurance" and all i got was references to Insurance in passing comments rather than an actual thread... but i think i should have expanded it a bit!

Thanks again

I'm with the KC Insurance as they cover working dogs but I've a couple of friends who are with NFU and they have found them very good indeed over a big, complex, health claim.

I'm also with NFU - specifically because their cover for each illness or injury is capped per year, not for the lifetime of the cover. I think my average plan covers for up to £2000 per illness/injury per year.

If you do decide to go with NFU, some agents claim that they can only offer you a policy as an add on to an existing household policy (like contents insurance or buildings insurance), but this is NOT the case with all NFU agencies. My local agency told me this and so I am now with the agent in the next town across from me - they had no issues and have been excellent. I can supply their details via DM if you decide to go that route :)

Not sure why you would want to throw your money away?! My understanding was while some companies offer "recreational" gundog insurance, or even gundog "topup" insurance (to cover solely injuries while working, as a top up to a standard pet plan), if you take any money for working your dog (as a beater / picker upper), you stray into a potentially grey area where you would need professional working dog insurance. I guess its all in the small print ...

Personally, my dogs are insured as pets, and I save a regular small amount to cover any injuries in the field.
