pups galore

Post by trekmoor »

I went onto one of those sites that sells any kind of pups to anyone for the first time today. Most of the pups for sale were "poos" of one cross or another. The prices I heard of for these crossbreeds seems to have dropped a bit from what they were about 2-5 years ago but were still far too high I.M.O.
I also noticed that one particular area of Scotland , the south west, had proportionally by far the most cross bred pups of various kinds up for sale.....is there a puppy farm business down there ?

One advert , not from s.w. Scotland, was offering a standard poodle X border collie for a very considerable amount of money. The last dog I saw of this breeding was when I was 13 years old. The dog belonged to a boyhood friend of mine's and he was a lovely dog in every way ......but he had been given away along with the rest of the litter.
I don't know how these modern breeders have the nerve to ask the prices they do for non-pedigree dogs.

i roll my eyes at adverts for poodle X's. I sometimes wish i'd been a poodle stud dog owner. I think if i advertised myself enough i'd be able to quit working   :brickwall: but in answer to your question i can imagine the colle x poodles would turn out like that 'specsavers' advert where the guy shears the collie instead of the sheep!

Thing is, that the poodle X phenomenom has made people think they can cross anything with anything, call it a fancy name, and make it ok and charge a 4 figure sum.
Years ago I remember seeing beagle x spaniels for sale. :brickwall: and i thought such a waste and she got offended when people jumped down her neck for breeding such a stupid mix.

Someone local to me got very annoyed when I gently queried their buying a second cockerpoo, their reason, they told me was so they could breed cockerpoos. I patiently, I thought so anyway, explained that even if they thought a cocker crossed with a poodle was a designer breed and not a mongrel a second crossing most definitely would be.
My favourite parts of these sort of conversations are where they tell you with enormous pride that their ooos parents were both KC registered.

some try to pass of 'KC reg' as something special when they're only registered with the activity register. :brickwall:

There are lots of dogs on the KC Activity register who are definitely "something special". Probably rescued not bought, and probably neutered. I wish the same could be said for lots of those on the breed register.

I haven't ever really made sense why someone would think a crossbreed is a good idea to buy or indeed breed.

Maybe I'm a dog snob now but these stupid dogs with "breed" names like Chug (chiawowah or however you bloody spell it and pug combo ) do not appeal to me in the slightest. I actually can't think of a combo id like to mix. They remind me of cut & shut cars from the 80's.
I can only hope that I am half the man my dog thinks I am.

If people are dumb enough to part with £1000 for a cross, then you can hardly blame the breeders! Just as many people breeding KC ESS, Cockers and Labs with no thought except cash.

It's the promotion that they are healthier than pedigree dogs that annoys me. A friend of my daughters bought a labradoodle against my daughters advice. The friend was told a load of clap trap about health and being hypoallergenic . This friend is the CEO of quite a large company and my daughter said to her she wouldn't accept the improbable spiel that someone gave her when trying to sell into her company so why believe the breeder. The dog was purchased for £ 1000, was never the healthiest and unfortunately died of renal failure at 2 years old
