Tail Bleeding

Post by sandabandit »

Hi can anyone give me some advice my ESS whilst hunting his tail end has started to bleed. I cleaned the wound which is a very small abrasion and applied some spray on plaster rested him up for a few days. Everything has been fine for three weeks of beating and running in two trials. I took him out this morning and his tail started to bleed again. Can any of our vets please advise the route to go down?

Tape his tail, using either vet tape or we have used insulating tape

We have a similar issue with our current lab. you really have to manage it. if it becomes persistent for a period of time then it can mean that it will need the tip removed.

we have moved furniture as ours has a particularly whippy wag in an attempt to manage it.

a friendly vet nurse gave us some vetbond to seal the would if we couldnt get it under control.

we are quite conscious now if he is having a good wag and hitting it on something.

Unfortunately this is what one has to deal with now that these bleeding heart bunny huggers have decided that it's a great idea to ban people docking tails. Because you know, we're a savage unthinking bunch who did that sort of thing just to make the dogs look proper. * rant off*

Yes I no but quite like the idea of letting the wound get fresh air and I can by the heavy duty plastic mesh it is used in engineering to protect shaft ends so hopefully won't be as expensive

Friend of mine used it on her undocked Weimie with some success, it enabled the tail to heal well, just strap it on with brightly coloured tape so's you can find it again when he flicks it off.

Have a look at this thread too;

I have used these with good effect. Once I'd bought the product I used the mesh tubes over and over again till they were too tatty to re-use and just bought extra rolls of the tape from Tesco.

I made the mistake of stopping using the protectors after I thought the tail had healed and it broke down again so second time I continued with them for several weeks after I thought it had healed even on just on dog walks and that did the trick.
