Ticks

Post by Cornish Cutie »

Having visited West Scotland for a weeks break (in the sun I may add!) our 3 year old Cocker managed to pick up approx 20 ticks per day!
Every evening I would sit and remove each one with a tick removal tool.

Now we are back home she seem quieter than usual and I'm worried that the excessive exposure to tick bites may have something to do with it.

I 'Frontlined' her a week before we left so I knew the little blighters wouldn't be feasting for too long!

Is it worth taking her to the vet for blood tests or should I just wait and see if she picks up?
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for lotions or sprays that would completely deter ticks?

If you are worried take her to the vets and seek vets advise in respect of deterrents while you are there.

Sounds odd but our JR used to come back plastered in flaming ticks after ratting/rabbiting. I got into the habit of steeping some garlic in water every time he had a bath then pouring it over him afterwards. No ticks since. I believe you can feed them garlic but didn't want to go down that road as it can be harmful if given too much. I figured he would lick less off his coat than he would ingest if I fed it to him.

Just because the dog had ticks it doesn't mean it's going to get ill. Get a decent tick prevention programme and don't worry. If your dog gets lethargic and stops eating then take it to the vet.

Use Advantix next time you go to a tick infested area, much better than Frontline. As for the dog, if she doesn't perk up soon check with your vet. Is she entire still? If so could it be her hormones rather than anything more sinister?
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Defiantly Advantix, frontline isn't very good for tick prevention .

Hope she's o.k

I use the (relatively) new Bravecto (it came out last year) It's a chewable tablet against ticks and fleas and it seems to be excellent. About £25 and lasts three months and I use it only over the summer.

Yes Judy she is still entire so maybe that's it.
Will definately use Advantix from now on. Thanks for your recommendation. :-D

If the dog is truly off colour, letharigc, has a temperature then visit the vets and mention the ticks.
And, yes, next time try Advantix; my preference as it repels the buggers. They will need to be bitten for Bravecto to work, but should die quickly enough to prevent disease transmission. Seresto collars are also good for a whole summer of protection.
