Well, picked my 6 month old ESS yesterday and was expecting a rough night and he didn't disappoint. Every time he is left in the kennel he is screaming and howling the place down. Started at 3 am this morning and apart from the odd 20 minutes he is at it .
When out and around you in the garden not a peep, happy to just lay down and go to sleep even in the middle of the lawn! As long as he knows your around his fine.
I've even put my house dog in the kennel next to him and no different . I don't open the kennel or let him see me until his been quiet for 10 minutes so he has not associated making noise gets him out.
He currently out there howling the place down, he has been fed watered and emptied himself!
Any ideas, I'm not expecting a magic cure here, but maybe an assurance that this is the norm!
I've just been round all the neighbours and explained the situation and assured them I wasn't killing a dog in the garden since 3 am. So far they seem to understand, all have their own dogs so that softened the blow at bit. I've also just put a radio on for him - good idea or not?

I presume he was kenneled before hand, or is to be his new routine?

Correct, born and raised in kennel. Spent the last 4 month with his litter sister. So a big change for him, but wow what a noise - and for such a long period.

He's been left too long with his litter sister and he's missing her...At least your neighbours are understanding at the mo...A radio is a good idea as are kong toys stuffed with food, anything to keep him occupied safely while he's in there...You are doing the right thing in only getting him out when he's quiet. It will pass but it's not nice to see a youngster distressed like that....

Is there any way you can build him up to it a bit? Feed him in there, leave him for short periods, give him a small space to stay in like a covered cage in the back of the kennel or a cardboard box (no staples) on its side with a piece of bedding in it so he feels more secure and has a 'cave' to retreat to.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Hi Pete, I could have written this word for word a few months ago - my dog was 8 months, he'd been kenneled with two other youngsters, and he was STRESSING OUT at the change in kennel here, not so much howling (although there was a fair amount of that) but really pacing and rubbing his paws raw doing so. It's not at all nice to watch, but I can assure you that your pup WILL get over it.
What worked for me was a combination of time (biggest thing), Skullcap & Valerian tablets, lavender oil in his bedding, rescue rememdy (the canine one, the normal one has alcohol in) in his water, an Adaptil collar, kongs/chews etc (he wasn't over interested in them) and consistent routine.
He did also get one short, sharp blast with the hose when he kicked off howling at night. If you can do that without your pup knowing it's come from you, it does work. It's not particularly pleasant, but it breaks the habit. (I know not everyone will agree with this, but if the neighbors stop being tolerant it may be needed!)

I agree with having a cave like bed in the kennel, kongs with food, chews and meals to make the place a home and stimulating. Also to never let out if noisy, only calm behaviour will be the key. Then too, as Alice has done, if really pushed because of incessant noise the consequence of a blast of water will answer what he is trying to solve.
