wanting local basics training and socialising for pup
Morning all
It'll be Christmas ish before my pup can see the wide world but I'm all for being ready in advance, I'm after some local training groups within say 10 miles of the A1/M62 jct so I can introduce her to the basics and other dogs/people
I have the pups mum but due to having loads of easily accessible private land to explore she maybe didn't get as much interaction as she should have ''not that she's aggressive but just sometimes a little giddy for 5 when meeting other dogs'' so want to do things differently this time.
Regards
J

I can second Kirkbourne Spaniels. I go to sessions when I can and they are a good bunch, Darren knows his stuff too!!!
Re: wanting local basics training and socialising for pup
If Kirkborne is not far from you also consider Simon Jewitt. I think his club is called Stoneycairn Gundogs. Lots of my friends train with him every week as he does pups through to advanced dogs. I've been on a few full-day sessions with him when he is closer to my area of the country and I really like his training style.

Re: wanting local basics training and socialising for pup
Thanks guys, just had a look on Simon's website and looks promising, Hessle is only a short jog East from me and his other ground mentioned on the site at Thirsk is about the same North
I know that basics and manners are pretty much the same no matter the breed but as you mentioned him going into advanced training when the time is right does he have much experience of HPR breeds ? As I want to pick a trainer to stick with ideally.
Many thanks for the help

Re: wanting local basics training and socialising for pup
Very few pro trainers understand HPRs. The best is undoubtedly Andy Cullen at Laoachan (?) Gundogs who I believe is now in Northumberland but seems to do a lot of workshops around the country. There's also Roy Bebbington of Gonegos HWVs based in North Yorks but not sure if he does training. He might be able to recommend somebody who does. Spaniel & Retriever trainers haven't a clue about how best to manage an HPR. You need to be an enthusiast to understand them.

I did find retriever training very helpful with my GSPs as it is part of their make up. But yes, you do need an HPR trainer preferably.

Again thanks for taking the time to reply to my post, I think Andy is at Alnwick which would be a step to far on a regular basis, probably end up going to Rory Major as you people are kind of confirming my thoughts but at 90mins drive may have to be a monthly visit and dinner on the way back for the Mrs to make a day of it.
