Whistle choice
Whistle choice
Any ideas about the best whistle choice to start my young gsp pup on when she is ready to train??? She is 7 month now and doing quite well. Just thought it about time to introduce a whistle in her training.
Re: Whistle choice
I just use an Acme 210 1/2, same as with the spaniels. Plenty windy where I am but no problem with the sound carrying. I start from the get-go with it so the whistle cues are well established by 7 months. If you prefer something louder then the Acme Thunderer is plenty loud enough. I just use one whistle because I can't be doing with faffing about with two. There is no 'best' whistle only what you think is best for you, so use what you prefer.

Agree with Naj. The ACME 210 1/2 is absolutely fine and produced in such numbers that it is cheaper than the 212.
Just make sure you buy at least three, one for your lanyard, plus spares for the glove box in the car and another clipped to your game bag. More than a few times I have grabbed my gear, dog, lead and keys only to arrive at our training area with no whistle. Obviously there are things you can do without a whistle but it is a pain when you realise it is still hanging on the coat hook back home.
Good luck with your pup.

Re: Whistle choice
It doesn't matter which whistle you use. Most of us have preferences though. I normally use a 211 1/2 but I also have a 212 which produces the same note but a little bit more loudly.

Re: Whistle choice
How about these new 'trial whistles' i see adverticed here in Sweden now? They seem shorter and lighter but what's the sound, i haven't managed to find that out. I guess ordering one will solve that problem. Anyone using them and what would the benefit be swapping the 210 1/2 i now use for all the dogs (eeer, all two of them)

Get a whole lot to test. The one your dog obeys is the right one.

Re: Whistle choice
Ha!! I actually had a big laugh a few weeks ago, i was training with a friend and when things got a lot less good than expected she explained 'It must be the whistle, it's too old'. I laughed so i almost peed myself, she then proceeded to explain that the whistle was very old, one she got for her first dog etc etc. I laughed even more as she went on to excuse her comment.Springfield Pointers wrote:Get a whole lot to test. Re: Whistle choice
If you are looking for something that is loud, makes a noise like a pea whistle but has no pea, does not rust with saliva (!) , lasts for years, and is cheap....

Or available for £2.49 including post......

Only one cautionary note. This whistle is approved by various football authorities, so watch out for your previously honest hound, lifting a paw, pads upwards, waiting for the backhander.

Yup. Been using Fox for ages now. They make dogs very obedient
Re: Whistle choice
I'm told they come in the same pitches as the standard whistles, they are just supposed to be more comfy to hold in your mouth for long periods.Hepe wrote:How about these new 'trial whistles' i see adverticed here in Sweden now? In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
