extra whistle

Post by ips »

Have noted on pics vids and a few folk in the field that some have two whistles one nomal 210-5 type and a bigger son of a bitch. What's the purpose (recall presumably) and benefits and do I need one???

If your dog has buggered off past the range of your normal whistle, a bigger one isn't going to make any difference to the problem you face at that particular moment.

I totally agree, so I am right then the extra one is just a louder one and a last effort to recall if the little sod beggers off a long way ?
Cant see the point just wanted to check that there wasn't more to it than I thought, seems not.

Might be. People also sometimes carry two whistles for different dogs as well.

There was once a trend with spaniels to use an Acme Thunderer as a stop whistle & a pea-less whistle for turn & recall but I think most use the one whistle these days - bit of a faff using two. Whatever whistle you use the dog still has to be taught to respond to it, they don't automatically do so just because it is louder. ;)

ps. I carry 2 of the same whistles because they last longer that way, or at least they seem to do. :-D

Someone in the trial world recently for what ever stupid reason uses a silent whistle for normal commands, also uses a normal 210.5 for other commands.
The best way ever I should imagine to confuse a dog
As SP noted, if it don't listen to the first it ain't going to listen to the second. Perhaps those with multiple whistles have more than one dog.

So, come on, who works their dogs (more than one dog) to different whistles? Sounds like a ruddy nightmare of a thing to do. :-D

Guilty as charged. I had a Lemon bitch (passed now) that I trained on an old black Acme whistle years back. When I moved on to the red fox whistles she just never responded to them. So I kept the Acme just for the little dear. Must be honest, now I just use one. But the Acme whistle still hangs on my hunting lanyard with the other one. So if ips saw me he'd wonder why I had two whistles:)
