Well socialised and patient 3 year old GSP (mine), and friends 1 year untrained old hpr just wants to play and is relentlessly all over it. No malice in it and just a pup being a pup but has never been "told off" by another yet. In fact mine used to be a pest with no manners when young so I appreciate that learning is part of growing up.
Could just wait for the most effective training of all dog on dog, or would you do something else?
Pestering puppy

Leaving it for the 3 year old to sort it out could lead to vet bills.
Re: Pestering puppy
One of my mates has a gsd that is now 3 and still jumps all over my spaniel, to the point my spaniel has started 'telling it of', bearing in mind he is possibly the softest dog I have ever met, it must of driven him mad. I have now stopped taking taking the dogs out together as unfortunately mine doesn't tell the shepherd of enough and its not fair on him to have to!
Sounds like the one year old needs some socialising work with your friend and I wouldn't want mine to be the guinee pig!
I think promoting your dog to the discipline job role is unfair as its promoting a personaillity that we dont like to see in our dog's? Ask your mate to work on it's behaviour before taking them out together, the younger one will be to obsessed with yours to learn any positive behaviour?
Just my thoughts however I personally cannot stand other peoples dogs jumping all over mine,

In reality, I will probably tolerate a bit of ragging ( and by inference expect her to), but when I think mine is getting pee'd off, will intervene before she does.
I suppose the slightly theoretic question underlying mine is can anyone other than another dog teach a dog what is acceptable and "socialise" it in a dog to dog sense. I'm guessing not.

Re: Pestering puppy
I've seen where the dog is the best one for teaching manners but as Naj warns some dogs maybe too aggressive in the lesson. Personally, I don't leave it entirely up to the older dog to discipline, I will interrupt pestering behavior with a 'No' and if trailing a lead, give it a firm jerk, if not, then maybe a bonk on the head with a rolled towel or, last resort, a scruff shake. I back it up, soon after, with praise or treats for any attempt at civility.

Re: Pestering puppy
I've just given up trying to walk my boy with a year old Labrador, for the same reason! I don't think she gets much interaction with other dogs and is so over the top with mine, that he tries to walk between my legs to get away from her. Mine will growl at other dogs if he thinks they are being rude, but it would seem that he is too gentlemanly to growl at a bitch!!! I've tried distracting her with retrieves, which worked to a certain extent...

The owner of the other dog is responsible for socialising it and ensuring it knows where the boundaries are. It sounds like they've missed the early socialising phase but that doesn't mean that they should do nothing, and it's certainly not fair on your dog to allow it to be unduly pestered or to encourage it to be aggressive just to sort the other owner's problem out.
