Cost of pups
Cost of pups
Am noticing lately that the prices of pups(hpr's) are heading steadily toward the 1k mark. Obviously something is only worth what people are willing to pay, but 800 plus quid is taking the proverbial tbh. I could not bring myself to give that kind of money especially when you convert to euro(i swear i was a scotsman in a previous life) at what point will people(buyers) just say ... nah it aint worth it?

Re: Cost of pups
Being a stingy bugger I won't pay £800 for an 8 week old pup. My stingy attitude began with labs , my best ever lab cost £30 and the next best was £60 , both dogs won trials.
With HPR'S I paid £200 for my first Brittany and £250 (I think) for my first GSP , both of those dogs won trials and qualified for Crufts and won there too. Good breeding is worth paying for but £800 is too rich for my blood.

Re: Cost of pups
Yep I thought the high prices would stop the pups going to unsuitable homes, but was I ever wrong.
Somebody was trying to rehome a HWV because at 8 month it was not showing enough wires

Re: Cost of pups
A few months ago I would wholeheartedly agree until I saw some (a lot) of adverts on a pet site for cockerpoos, jackadoodles, puggles the list goes on for £900+! I was astounded and it wasn't just the odd one. These pups have not been registered, would struggle to do a days work, have not undergone any health tests yet command more than a well bred working labrador or cocker. I have to say my puppy price is going up this year.....usually £500 for a spaniel and £650 for a labrador with DNA tests etc for both
Having said that's saw a friends FTCh x FTCh bred bitch spaniel pup today from Buccleuch, £750. Very nice pup. Nice to see they aren't taking advantage of their name

Re: Cost of pups
Buccleuch have come down in price over the years, they were a grand 5 or so years ago, then dropped to £800 when I was on a waiting list for a pup fro jazz but sadly not enough bitchs were born.
If it was easy it wouldn't be so much fun.
Re: Cost of pups
HPRs were historically more expensive than spaniels & retrievers because it was argued that, in the early days, they were having to import suitable dogs from abroad with all the expense that involved. But only a few breeders were doing that & the rest just jumped on the bandwagon. £800 is a lot of money, especially when there's always a question mark in the mouth department with some of these breeds. I presume the cost of springers has dropped because of the overwhelming fad for cockers over the last few years. Demand & supply will always have an influence on price, whether the pups are registered or unregistered, as will what the breeder thinks they might get away with.
