Hi everyone, I've got a 7 month old gsp I'm training to work (my first working dog). Wondering if anyone is near by for potential training buddies and guidance?
Thanks Nicky

Join the club I mentioned on the other thread you started. You will find there are several people in it from the parts of Scotland you mentioned. The closest members of this forum to you are me and "Cambusvale" . We have both trained , worked and trialed G.S.P.'s. We both live in central Scotland however which may be too far for you to travel. Ally ( Cambusvale) has 3 G.S.P.'s at present and I have one Brittany.

I have a 10 month pup coming to me for training in Jan if it all goes to plan. As Bill says we may be out of your range as I live in clackmannanshire. The GSP Club in scotland run days as Bill has already stated along with the GSP Northern club. I would be glad for you to meet up in the coming months as I will be taking a pup forward, my other dogs are well advanced so would not be of much use to you other than see how I develop them further.

Hey thanks again. Yeh I've been in touch with Margaret and will be down in the new year with the pup. Ally I actually came across your YouTube channel and it has been most helpful in helping me as a beginner self teach. I always keep an eye out for your new videos, it really is a great channel and really impressive dogs/handling.
Cheers Nicky.

Don't you mean "one Brittany" has you?
Funnily enough, I met an old friend today at my mates keeper's day, an auld Irish guy who won the championship with an Irish Setter, he's had Pointers and Setters, and various crosses for 50+ years, we were talking dogs, I expressed an interest in getting a pointer, either a GSP or an English Setter, he said the Brittany he had was one of the very best dogs he'd ever had and recommended I get one over a GSP.

I think where people fall down with all the HPR breeds, including Brittanies, is that they get them but haven't the facilities to shoot over them. Of all the breeds I think the HPRs benefit the most from being shot over on low densities of game. Shoot a few birds over their point and it suddenly all starts making sense to them and they quickly see the point that working with you as part of a partnership is the best way to kill birds. I also think that when you're not regularly shooting over your HPR you get far too preoccupied with tight control, which can be counter productive to game finding ability in a dog where you're largely reliant on initiative and self reliance around game to fill the bag.

I hear what you're saying Naj, it's the biggest reason I've still not got one, I'd use it for spring grouse pair counts on my own, we count 10 acre blocks by walking in line so a pointer is not a necessity and summer brood counts which the GWCT do. I don't do much shooting myself other than training my dogs and along with friends and thier springers, keeper's days and the odd nights duck fighting. I don't see where one would fit in? I'd really love one all the same!!!
