Welcome to the forum.

What do you want the dog for? Upland hunting, wildfowling? In theory they are all easy to train once you find what makes the individual tick. However, Labs and Springers have the reputation of being easier, certainly in the UK. Really depends on what type of gun dog work you like, and where you will be working the dog the majority of the time, as to what you buy. If you do a lot of hunting and game is scarce then a Versatile would be most use - German Shorthaired Pointer or similar.

Ive been reading blogs about upland hunting as well and I guess I'm getting the same answers that the Germanic “versatile” breeds all handle the job pretty well.

Welcome to the forum. As Judy said it really depends on what kind of work you hope to do when it comes to what breed to buy. A G.S.P. is a good bet among the versatile breeds. They are usually pretty straight forward to train but be sure to buy from working stock not show stock.

Hi, go look see what the majority of other hunters in your area are favouring as a breed type and go with that. I'd be guessing one of the pointing breeds. :-D

Hello newbie from TX Im also from TX and new to this forum this being my first post Ive lived in Alaska the last fifteen years but about fifty back home in the Republic before leaving.Unless you travel to shoot birds, the main choices will be dove both white wing and mourning, or waterfowl, ducks, geese and cranes. There are some Bob white Quail and some pheasants but they have limited ranges nowadays ,also some game farm shooting for planted birds. Where you live and your main pursuits should dictate ur choice. My favorite is dove shooting followed by puddle ducks , I hunt a Boykin Spaniel, mainly as a retriever. Here in AK she hunts grouse and Ptarmigan a little ,ynly a little because getting to the birds is getting very hard for me. If I had the ability to cover more ground and were back in TX I look hard at a good wire haired pointing gryphon. Hook em

Well we don't live in igloos we actually have houses and very few live in the bush ,we have just about all the shops you would ever need. We are short on decent restaurants though. We also have an extreme amount of wild land and wildlife with the big plus of no type of firearm restrictions including no license for concealed or open carry of side arms, I carry a 45 colt on walks and training so no problems with aggressive dogs ,do have to watch for bear, wolves,Lynx and moose which are the most worry.
