Has anybody any suggestions as to how to stop snow balling up on a cockers legs and body.

You can buy the stuff American and Canadian dog sled folk put on their dogs legs and paws. I've never used it but have been told it works very well.

Personally, I clip short my spaniels featherings if I expect snowballing problems.

Trex, Flora White or Cookeen is the stuff. Vegetable based.

Last time I had this problem (it doesn't often happen down south) I put them all into fleece jumpers, one thought hers was wonderfully warm so much so she broke the ice and went swimming. One decided to lie down and not move at all, when we went back to her to chivvy her along we found she'd tried to escape the coat and had got both front legs up through the neck and rendered herself immobile.

So, perhaps try Scotsgent's idea first. Or you could try groom spray / detangler, that might work.

Thanks for all your replies clipped all the feathers off the cocker yesterday with scissors not an easy task and will try some of the sprays vegetable oil seems to be one recommended on google. Woke this morning and snow nearly all gone so problem solved until next time.

Natural lanolin rubbed on before going out into snow .... doesn’t clog the coat like other oils and fats!

Of course here in Canada I deal with snow all the time. I have used spray bottles of Canola oil sold for BBQ grills with limited success. I find nothing really works better than trimming. I don't usually find so much problem with feathers as the hair between toes. When snow balls up in their feet it really seems to bother them. Soon it won't be a problem here as snow only packs like this close to 0C. When it is colder that -5 or so it is nice and dry and does not bother the dog at all.

I find a great way to deal with is a warm blanket and a glass of port.

In front of a roaring fire.
