When I was working I had to travel so much I really began to hate it. I am really a homebody at heart and very happy to stay here with the dogs. However, my paternal Grandparents came to Canada from Clachnaharry Scotland (just west of Inverness). He was a Presbyterian Minister liked shooting and was a very keen angler. He and my grandmother did very well in Canada and never returned to Scotland even for a visit. I have always wanted to see where they came from. So my wife and I are planning a trip for a year from now. I don't intend to travel far from Inverness. To get me on a Coach with a bunch of tourists you would need to hold a gun to my head, and I would probably beg you to shoot. We just plan to spend a week or so in that area and get to know it a bit. I have found on-line a group that offers trout fishing for a day so will probably do that. As our dates are still flexible I thought I would ask about Gamefairs or Dog Trials/Tests in that area. I would really enjoy seeing dogs work and to get a better sense of how things are done over there. If anyone could point me in the right direction I can do follow up research on line from here.

CC here are a few web sites you could keep an eye on if you're planning to come across next year..
Moray Firth Spaniel and Retriever Club -
https://mfsrc.co.uk/
All their trials should be reasonably close to Inverness with the dates published on their web page. The Moy Gamefair is just a few miles from Inverness but it's held in early August.
North of Scotland Gundog Club -
https://www.nosga.co.uk/
Again all details of trials, dates, breeds etc will be listed on the web -
https://www.nosga.co.uk/
Events with nosga are usually held on the easterly side of the Cairngorm mountain range - Banchory, Braemar areas.
UK Kennel Club information sites that could be useful for dates for next year :
https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/ ... sdiary.pdf - fine for Breed Trials information and dates throughout the UK - Spaniels, Retrievers, HPR and P/S along with the respective Societies/Clubs running the events
https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/ ... s_list.pdf - should you need to find out who the Secretaries are a phone call a few days before to ask if you can attend is all that is needed.

Jangles and Wullie, thank you for your efforts to help. I do really appreciate it. From the links to 2018 events Jangles provided it looks like September may be a bad month to choose. I am basing my choice of September for our trip on the assumption that the full blown summer tourist season will be over and it fits nicely between some very good fishing here in August and waterfowl kicking in in October. Upon reflection I am blessed to have choices between many things, all of which are good.

I would agree CC, September is a quiet month for competition with the Game Fair and Working Test seasons passed and the trialling season yet to get into full swing, well for spaniels anyway. Retrievers will have trials on grouse and partridge.
As you say, nice to have the choices... and if you come to Scotland in September you MIGHT not get as wet as you will in October!!!

Thanks WGD, I also have to consider Mrs. CC who like many of her ilk is much easier to get along with if her butt is dry
