I've noticed, personally speaking, a new pup generates a lot of attention from me to its training. Older dog, I gradually ease up on a lot of the requirements because I feel the dog knows the score and after all I want to now relax cause we have arrived and this vigilance is lot of effort, so, I cool. Older dog, now has become even more confident and picks up that it can use more initiative because pressure is waning or almost none existent. Essentially, I have trained it to take more freedom in the hunt or retrieve and to consider me more as a hunting buddy.
As to reinforcement of behavior, needing worry, the dog is in that wonderful world of self gratification (positive reinforcement) galore and I have found myself puzzled that we are no longer working as a team.
PS. perhaps Eze, is in season ?
