dogs behaving antisocial

Post by liftboy1 »

Hi guys, my gsp who is 15 months hold has no faults bar one, He is really anti-social in public. He walks to heel out in the fields and doesnt jump up etc, but if a neighbour bumps into me the dog is wild, pulling on the lead towards them, gaping at them, not in a nasty way, and its embarissing, i have tried to put him in this position as many times as possible but it seems like a one off! Do you think walking him round town might help, where there will be plenty of people?

Hello, good way to get your dog more social when meeting people is to get your neighbour or friend to walk towards you and as soon as your dog starts acting the goat he/she stops. You then get your dog under control ie sitting at heal. Once your dog is calm your friend starts to come forward again. If the dog acts up stop and repeat and so on and so on. They might only get one step forward at a time but with a little time this should work. Make sure the dog is calm before you take each step. Will also help if your friend makes no eye contact or talks to the dog during this as it can lead to more excitment. Try to stay calm yourself as well.

Hope that helps!
