Kennel sizes

Post by stevew »

I am planning a kennel for a Labrador. How big should the sleeping cabin be?

At some point in the future I may want another dog. Can I keep 2 dogs in the same kennel sharing the same run and sleeping cabin?

Thanks for any advice.

I would make the full kennel 12ft x 5 ft and the sleeping quarters 5ftx 3ft.

Is that for one or two dogs?

You would fit two labs in that sleeping area.

Welcome BTW... :-D

box size depends on if you are heating them or not. if not then you need to make them big enough to fit 2 dogs but not too big as obviously the larger the pocket of air in the box the colder it will get in the winter.

fwiw ours are 1.2m x 90 and theyre big enough for 2 labs and have slept 2 labs and a springer with ease.

runs, bigger is better

I’m interested why you say that as over the years we’ve had big runs and the dogs don’t use em. All the dogs we’ve had have used the kennel as a place to chill, they do use the day benches if its hot but not the actual run bit, so the last kennel we had, we reduced the run size which is now only four ft x five ft.

Security cams can be bloody boring to watch in our house…..

These are the only picture’s I’ve got but gives you some idea…

well by the time you have put benches/beds in the run part, bowls and 2/3 dogs in a run I like to see them have some space, I dont thing individually each run on ours is much bigger than yours, but I designed ours so they can either be 3 seperate kennels or if I leave internal doors open dogs can share and have even more room.

The day benches are actually the top of the sleeping boxes, they don’t have a separate bench in the run bit and there is plenty of space for water bowls. I also put different dogs in different kennels every now and again just to confuse the little blighters.

same here, except they have benches as well as sleep on top or in the boxes ....perhaps a bit spoilt then. dont swap them around generally as we have one OCD lab who likes things to be clean
