Re: Dropping a dead for a runner

I must have been born at just the right time to be able to take my gun and my dogs out rough shooting either at no cost at all or for as little as £50 per year on one very large farm. I did rough shooting while paying nothing at all for nearly 50 years !

Re: Ghillie's Report Card

Then I got a nice surprise with the road tax too.... £30 a year instead of £320 !!! :50: Shouldn't that have a 1 in front of it  Unless there is nothing in the engine compartment and the driving pedals rotate    Nope Peter, it definitely is £30 per year instead of £320 per...

Re: Ghillie's Report Card

Apart from going fishing about a week ago....and catching nothing..... I have hardly been over the doorstep for weeks. I finally decided that I no longer needed a 4 x4 car since I wasn't going to shoots and sold it today and bought another "new to me" old banger. Every cloud has a silver lining coz ...

Re: Dropping a dead for a runner

I've always found that if a dog is allowed to prioritise it will choose a runner or even a non-running flapping bird over a dead bird with no need for any training from me.

Re: Become a positive trainer for 7k

And if corrections and punishment are nature’s way and you can’t possibly train a gundog without them why are there so many ‘wild’ dogs seen at shoots, invariably trained through corrections because traditional trainers still outnumber positive trainers by a hefty margin? Naj Because a crap trainer...

Re: Become a positive trainer for 7k

And trying to fit in with traditional pro Trainers has been a limitation rather than an advantage because we’re following completely different routes to meet the same ends and the traditional one is stifling innovation and progress, plus some pro trainers were playing lip service to it for the sake...

Re: A faltering out run

When a dog slows or stops in the way you have described it is often due to the dog perceiving that training is a "correction." You may not see it as such but it is what the dog thinks that matters. Have you ever stopped her on the outrun to a dummy? Naj asked this question because doing this "wrongl...

Re: Become a positive trainer for 7k

( Yes it didn't go un noticed that one has Viszlas....for picking up :) As the viszla is among the softest and most sensitive of all the HPR and gundog breeds it does not surprise me at all that a positive only type trainer would choose that breed to own and train. I have helped with the training o...

Re: Dropping a dead for a runner

That is why I make my "minefields" using dead birds and not dummies. The dog is sent for a dummy but the birds are uppermost in it's mind so the dummy is more likely to be spat out in favour of a bird. Dogs tend to prioritise and that goes.... runners first, dead birds second, dummies last. A cold d...
