Re: Close minded people.

I used to get some abuse from my work colleagues for "being sick and cruel for killing wildlife" when I mentioned the dogs/shooting etc.

The same people gave me abuse for releasing salmon to spawn rather than killing them for them to eat!

Re: Boots!!!

Been hearing very good things about these: http://www.blackislander.co.uk/catalogue/a-blackislander-diotto-no-scratch-boots.htm Unfortunately I'll have to stick with my Grisport boots, which are letting dampness in, on drier days and my Superlite wellies on damper days. I bought some of these last ...

Re: What is the idea of a retrieving lane?

Cjaus! What a fantastic bit of ground you have access to for training! You have made at least one person extremely jealous! I had a few fields to train in before one farmer decided to put sheep in his field, another ploughed his for wheat and the last wee field I had access to has just bee...

Re: What is the idea of a retrieving lane?

I use a narrow path as the first step in teaching the "back" command. It makes things much easier for the dog as there is nowhere else for them to go. "Retrieving lane" does sound better than "the wee pad [path] te the wood"!

Re: Leave it

It can be a very useful thing to teach a dog for the odd time that the dog is returning with a dead bird and another bird is shot that's a runner. You need the dog to drop the dead bird and redirect it out for the runner.

Re: My Head's About To Explode !!!

It definately can be confusing, no question about that. Everyone has their own way of doing things which is clear to be seen from the posts and replies on this forum. Not only that but every book you read or DVD you watch will also show different ways of trying to achieve the same end result. In my ...

Re: "Get Out" Vs "Back"

Different theory from me although someone might tell me I'm wrong. I've found the "Leave that" command to be useful in that situation, in conjunction with you then moving round to face the direction you want the dog to go in and bringing the dog round with you at heel as you move so it is...

Re: "Get Out" Vs "Back"

In my book it's commands for two situations. "Get out" is to send the dog in the direction you are indicating from beside you. "Back" is for when a dog has worked too far towards you and you stop it maybe a hundred yards out it and want it to go back out directly away from you. ...
