I have seen a couple of Goldengroves Gripper offspring and liked them very much, he seems to throw very stylish small, compact but powerful dogs. Whilst he lacks the Kiltonbeck Warlord or Scimitar bitch line, I think he is the best of what's been suggested so far.

There is also Goldengroves Gripper's son, Nick Ridley's 'Harry' (Whaupley Sharp Image), if you would be willing to use a Reiver Grandson.

He is FTW Goldengroves Gripper x FTCh Bryncerdin Awenna. Andy and Fiona will be able to tell you much more about her, but when she passed away just after Christmas Andrew eulogized her as "A great little bitch that had over 15 places in Open stakes and was unlucky not to win several more". She was a daughter of Scimitar so would tie in well.

Nick has taken a lot of top-class videos of himself shooting over Harry this season- he hunts well and certainly looks like an excellent shooting dog.
(this link http://www.youtube.com/user/nickridley9 ... id&view=0- should take you to his videos)
cheers,
Alice.

I have on several occasions had the pleasure of taking Silvertips Knight of Danalimatt beating, when he has boarded with me. He has drive and style, is fully health tested including hips and is worth consideration.

Hi Eoin,

Reiver himself is a small compact dog, and as you know, as well as being a cracking dog himself who worked on the grouse moor all through his trialling career, also has the benefit of being a complete outcross, so suitable to put over pretty much all the common lines. In terms of a son of Reiver, I'd go with a dog with a proven record himself, and a proven record of producing. In this I'd recommend FTW Goldengroves Gripper, a small gold dog who has produced some very smart stuff, and throws roan. He is another outcross, onto an open winning bitch, going back to some nice lines. His progeny seem to have no shortage of pace and style.

Cheers,
Nick

This post started on Feb.21st last when I was seeking a son of the now recently deceased Whaupley Reiver as a potential stud dog to mate with 2 of my Scimitar bitches.
As requested at the time a good working/ shooting dog would suffice as I was aware that Reiver trialling winners were not abundant on the ground unless as suggested I wished to travel a very long way North in the general Scandinavian direction ! Amongst other suggestions I considered Nick Ridley's dog Whaupley Sharp Image/ Goldengroves Gripper etc.
At the end of the day I chose 2 sires from Will Clulee, the bitches subsequently mated (One in Pup & one pending) and closed the chapter on my quest . . . . .
That is until 4 weeks ago at a Novice Handlers Spaniel Training Day at which I assist along comes a new ''face'' with a 9 month old Springer pup and to accompany the pup a somewhat older liver/red Cocker that just screamed quality from the moment I set eyes on him !
Enquiries ascertained that he was of Maesydderwen breeding but the sire's identity was unknown to the handler but subsequent to a phone call he confirmed that the dog was a son of . . . yes you've guessed the rest !
In front of me was a son of Whaupley Reiver x Maesydderwen Snipe ,bought from Tony Read as a 10 week old pup & now a half brother to the multi FTCH Wetlands Spice of Leeglen ( Maesydderwen Sorcerer x Maesydderwen Snipe) this year's recipient of the award for the most points garnered by an individual dog/bitch in competitive trials & a bitch that I had closely watched in the last 3 Championships! !
Cloak & dagger negotiations over the next week ensued but the happy outcome is that Wetlands Jack Snipe has taken up permanent residence with me, the most affable sweet natured Cocker that one could dream of ever owning.
Last Saturday I entered him in a test run by the Northern Ireland Working Club and beyond our wildest dreams we were placed 3rd in the Open, the 1st time that ''Finn'' had ever competed in either a test/ trial as heretofore he had been a shooting dog through & through.
He will now compete in Tests throughout the Summer and the trial circuit beckons in the Autumn.
You just never know when a 'field of dreams'' comes your way !

Thanks Helen,
I have recounted the saga to Andy & Fiona at Whaupley & assured them that Reiver's bioodlines have found a new arena as Finn features in my future breeding plans and indeed I have also received a number of independent inquiries since his arrival.
Indeed he is a rare commodity as Wetlands Jack Snipe ''Finn'' is by Reiver a grand son of arguably Peter Jones' most influential bitch ever Wernffrwd Kathleen being mated to Maesydderwen Smarty who is a grand daughter of Wernffrwd Kathleen, so mating ''Finn'' with any of my Scimitar bitches ( Scimitar being a son of Kathleen) the resultant progeny would be linebred through 3 Grand parents back to Kathleen which is essence was the reason for my seeking a son of Reiver in the 1st instance !
I know that the COI would be higher than average but I believe that Reiver's sire line has enough outcross blood to compensate.
Have to admit I'm still pinching myself to make sure it's not all a dream !
