Re: How many meals a day?
Daily ration split into two with my three. Fed after exercise in the morning. Again after they have been walked and we have eaten our evening meal.
Personally with my breed I would never exercise after food. Training seems easier with an unfed dog, always eager to comply in case a treat might be in the offing.

Adults once a day in the evening , pups at 12 month old ,morning and evening. Extra may be given as and when dogs are working hard several days a week.

This is how I feed mine, I have one who if you gave him 5 meals a day he would eat them because they were there (He reminds me of a friend in the army whose view was when deployed "if you get the chance to eat - eat, if you get the chance to sleep - sleep!)westcountry wrote: ↑Wed May 20, 2020 9:02 pm Adults once a day in the evening , pups at 12 month old ,morning and evening. Re: How many meals a day?
Reading some of the posts, it seems some think feeding twice or three times daily is giving the dog more food. To clarify, in my case, I just divide up the whole days ration by three. So the meals are small and do not bloat or hinder a dog from working or training.

Same here , dog is fed twice a day, total feed is based on condition. The only difference is that breakfast is also divided further between breakfast and Kong to be given later if I am going out.newf wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 10:02 am Reading some of the posts, it seems some think feeding twice or three times daily is giving the dog more food. Re: How many meals a day?
I feed my current little pack twice a day. For many years I always fed just once in the evening. Can’t say I really see a lot of difference in performance. But they expect it now so easier to go along. My father use to feed his dogs one a day, six days a week. He felt it kept them healthier and keener to have one day of fasting a week. He always had keen healthy dogs?

Re: How many meals a day?
I hear of some treat trainers having no set meal times. Dog has to earn every morsel of food. Wonder ? Do they have keen dogs ? or would they be neurotic from never being able to settle down cause in essence there is no end of meal. Not a healthy way to train in my opinion.
Further to that, on another forum and many years ago, a poster admitted to regularly fasting his dog for up to 24 hours, so, he would have the right motivation set for training. Then asked if any forum members practiced his routine, since it was a positive only site ?
Goes to show, physical punishment can be more humane than some of these schemes to eliminate correction.
Re: How many meals a day?
My one often goes a day without eating of her own fruition, apart from carrot treats in the evening which she never refuses

Mine, eat like horses. I shudder to think, if the feed bucket ever falls over and spills, when we are away.
