ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL KEEPS ESCAPING

Thank you all so very much for taking the time to respond. I have sat here all day watching him, he knows i'm watching and keeps hiding lol didn't realise he was so crafty. I have now noticed that he is climbing the fence and using the trellis as steps (the claw marks up the fence have given it away). He is entire and has not been mated. He doesn't always go to the same place but there are a couple of springer owners around so perhaps there is a bitch in heat. I have noticed however that when it has thundered or the weather has changed (hail stones today) he appears to be spooked and has escaped. I'am going to have to explore the run I think or if anyone has a sprawling farm and would like a (KC registered) black & white worker let me know lol.

What kind of kennel does the dog have just now?
It sounds like he scared of the noise from the likes of the hail stones hitting the roof and he's trying to get away. This might sound abit daft, try putting a second skin on the kennel dont make it solid something like sponge but with a rubber sheet over it would take a fair bit of the noise away it may keep him warmer.
I would ask about the local bitches to check if they are on heat just in case. Could you do anything with your fence to angle the trellises back wards like the security fences? I have black and white working lines whats his pedigree? What got you into Springers

I have his Pedigree certificate but not fully understanding these things all I know is its a 5 generation pedigree with lots of FT CH on the cert. My husband has always had springers from being a small boy and we wanted an all round dog that could go out with my husband when shooting and one that would be suitable around our children, he is a gorgeous dog and he's not hairy or sad eyed monsoon lol.

You seem to have the space for it so I'd get a solid kennel and run built as fast as possible. If your dog tries to eat its way through a wooden kennel then line the walls with weldmesh. Neither kennel nor run need to be large if the dog is regularily taken out for exercise etc. .......... Roof the run !

Thank you very much Wullie, we have lots of space and a full area in the garden that isn't used so think the run is going to be our best option will the dog be ok with this as he has had the full run of a very large garden up until now?

Your dog should learn to accept it's smaller world fairly quickly. Try feeding him in the run. Try sitting in the run with him for a while - take a book with you.

If hailstone noise etc. worries him and if it wont be too much of an eyesore try fastening carpet onto the kennel roof to deaden the sound.
My own larger kennel is double roofed. The under roof is the usual tar cloth sort of stuff, the top roof is of tarry heavy corrugated stuff fastened onto a wooden frame that is screwed onto the under roof. My run is covered with that same corrugated tarry stuff.
So my kennel is double proofed against rain and sound is deadened a bit inside it too.

He has a large double shed size building with a smaller kennel built inside, he sleeps inside the smaller kennel. We are going to move this and add the run onto the shed and hope this works. Mt husband has had him out today for hours walking and swimming and he made no attempt to run. While they were out I have reorganised my barricades lol which he seems to be bewildered with and hasn't yet attempted the great escape, see what tomorrow brings!

To stop him climbing over the fence place the trellis on the top at 90 degrees with some shelf brackets, worked to keep my lab in who would scale the fence
